Railways is set to cancel around 39 lakh tickets booked for travel between April 15 and May 3 due to extension of the nationwide lockdown and suspension of passenger trains till then in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, sources told PTI.
With the national transporter allowing tickets to be booked during the 21-day lockdown for journeys after April 14, around 39 lakh bookings were made by passengers hoping that trains will be in operation post-lockdown.
However, with the announcement of the extension of the lockdown period, railways on Tuesday not only cancelled all its passenger services till May 3 but also stopped all advance bookings.
All passengers will, however, get full refund for tickets booked for the cancelled trains as well as for those booked in advance.

Sikkim on Tuesday decided to allow construction and farming activities from April 21 to sustain the livelihood of the poor in the state, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said.
Farmers will be required to follow the guidelines on maintaining social distance in their fields, while contractors can resume construction activities by engaging only local labour force, he told reporters.
Tamang thanked the people of Sikkim for their cooperation in the enforcement of the lockdown since March 25 and said it has been due to a collective effort that the state has been able to prevent the coronavirus outbreak.
"It is a matter of great satisfaction to all of us that there has been no case of coronavirus in Sikkim, so far," he said.
The chief minister also announced a one-time incentive of Rs 5,000 for ASHA workers and Rs 3,000 for all Sikkim Police and home guard personnel for their work during the outbreak.

The novel coronavirus has killed more than 120,000 people worldwide, nearly 70 percent of them in Europe, according to a tally compiled by AFP at 1100 GMT Tuesday from official sources.
A total of 120,013 deaths have now been recorded since the epidemic first emerged in China in December, 81,474 of them in Europe.
The figures were collated using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Spain's death toll from the novel coronavirus topped 18,000 on Tuesday, as the rise in new infections dropped to its lowest level since the country imposed a nationwide lockdown last month.
The 567 new deaths reported by the health ministry were slightly up from Monday's death toll and they take the total number of fatalities to 18,056 --- officially third in the world behind the United States and Italy.
The number of new infections rose by just over 3,045, or 1.8 percent, to 172,451, the smallest increase since the country of around 47 million people imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 14 to curb the spread of the virus.

Mumbai recorded 92 new COVID-19 cases, including six from the hotspot of Dharavi slum, raising the state total from 2,334 to 2,455, officials said here on Tuesday.
As per the provisional figures this morning, of the total 121 new cases detected on Tuesday in the state, 13 are from Navi Mumbai, Thane 10, Palghar five and Raigad one.
Till Monday Maharashtra notched 161 deaths, the highest in the country, and the state recorded 352 new cases on Monday, the highest single day tally so far.

The number of coronavirus cases in Madhya Pradesh has gone up to 730 with 126 more people testing positive for the disease in the last 24 hours, a senior health official said on Tuesday.
In the last 24 hours, 1,171 people were tested for coronavirus in the state.
Of these, 126 were found positive for coronavirus in the reports received till Monday night, taking the total number of COVID-19 patients in Madhya Pradesh to 730, state health commissioner Faiz Ahmed Kidwai on Tuesday.
So far, 50 people have died in the state due to coronavirus, he said.
Tikamgarh district has also reported its first case of coronavirus, the offiical said.
There are total 278 containment zones formed in the coronavirus affected districts of the state, he said.

A 96-year-old male succumbed to coronavirus infection in a government hospital in Karur, taking the death toll in Tamil Nadu due to Covid-19 to 12 on Tuesday.
A state government statement said the nonagenarian patient hailing from Dindigul was admitted to the Karur Government Medical College Hospital on April 9.
He had breathing problems and died at 6.40 am on Tuesday, the statement said.

There is no evidence that the Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine, which is primarily used against tuberculosis, protects people against infection with the novel coronavirus, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.
The WHO therefore didn't recommend BCG vaccination for the prevention of COVID-19 in the absence of evidence, according to its daily situation report on Monday, Xinhua news agency reported.

The United States recorded 1,509 deaths related to the coronavirus pandemic over the past 24 hours, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University as of 8:30 pm Monday.
The number of fatalities was similar to the previous day's toll of 1,514.
