Al-Bashir to be probed over money-laundering suspicions

Sudan's public attorney on Saturday ordered the African country's ousted President Omar al-Bashir to be investigated on suspicion of money-laundering and possession of large sums of foreign currencies.

If convicted, Al-Bashir, who remains under house arrest since his ouster earlier this month, could be sentenced to up to 10 years in jail.

Army and intelligence officers searched his house and found over 6 million euros, 351,000 dollars and 5 million Sudanese pounds, Anti-corruption prosecutor Moatasem Abdullah Mahmud was cited as saying by Efe news.

CJI cites 'criminal record' of woman who has accused him of sexual harassment

Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, who held an extraordinary hearing in the Supreme Court on Saturday over allegations of sexual harassment against him, cited "criminal record" of the accuser during the proceedings.

The CJI, who along with Justices Arun Mishra and Sanjiv Khanna assembled to hear the matter which was described as of "great public importance touching upon the independence of judiciary", said that the woman, a former apex court employee, had a criminal record and two FIRs were lodged against her.

In a letter addressed to 22 other apex court judges, the woman had said that she was a junior court assistant in the apex court. She said she had joined the service on May 1, 2014 and her service was terminated on December 21, 2018.

Kirti Azad files papers for Dhanbad LS seat

Cricketer-turned-politician Kirti Azad filed his nomination papers on Saturday for Jharkhand's Dhanbad Lok Sabha seat on a Congress ticket.

Only district level leaders were present during the occasion as Azad is facing protests by local Congress leaders who consider him an outsider.

Azad had joined the Congress in February. A three-time MP, he was suspended from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2015 after some of his remarks were seen as a violation of party discipline.

Don't vote for communal candidates: Goa Archbishop

A week after a Goa Catholic priest apologised to the poll authorities for a hate speech urging people not to vote for the BJP, Goa's Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao on Saturday urged voters not to cast their ballot for those candidates who "corrupt, communalize, exploit and divide".

In his message on the eve of Easter Sunday, Ferrao said: "As we stand on the threshold of parliamentary elections as well as by-elections in some of our constituencies, let us pray that our electorate will vote for the forces which empower the weak, the marginalised and the exploited, rather than those that corrupt, communalise, exploit and divide".

Ferrao is the religious and spiritual leader of more than a quarter of the state's 1.5 million population which is Catholic in religious orientation.

Three youths commit suicide in J-K's Rajouri

Three youth allegedly committed suicide by hanging themselves inside their houses in three separate incidents in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said Saturday.

On Friday, Ram Lal (22) was allegedly found hanging from the ceiling of his room at Hasoit-Sunderbani in the district, police said.

In an another incident, Sourav Singh (28) and Vanny Bhalla (21) were found hanging from the ceiling of their rooms on Saturday at Khadarian-Kalakote and Jawahar Nagar areas of Rajouri district respectively, a police official said.

NIA picks up a youth in Hyderabad for ISIS links

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday conducted raids at a few places in Hyderabad and arrested a youth for his alleged links with an ISIS module.

The NIA sleuths picked up the accused after conducting searches at eight places in the old city of Hyderabad, police sources said. The NIA had also raided one place in Maharashtra's Wardha.

The youth was shifted to NIA's regional office in Madhapur for questioning.

Sec 144 imposed in Pudukottai dist after violence over audio on community

Prohibitory orders were clamped in parts of the district that witnessed violence after an audio clip containing alleged derogatory remarks about a community went viral, police said on Saturday.

Nearly 1,500 police personnel have been deployed in Ponamaravathy area, where violence was reported and regulatory orders under CrPc section 144 had been promulgated to restore normalcy, they said adding situation in the area was being closely monitored.

Meanwhile, District Collector Uma Maheswari Saturday ordered closure of liquor shops in the district.

Major fire at oil production unit near Nashik

An oil production unit located in an industrial area in Sinnar near here suffered severe damages in a major fire early on Saturday, police said.

No loss of life was reported in the incident that took place around 3 am, they said.

"The security guard posted there noticed the blaze and informed the company owners and other authorities about it. A major tragedy was averted as the incident happened in the wee hours, when there were no employees in the unit," police said.

Traffic diverted on Delhi-Pauri highway after bridge develops cracks

After a bridge on the Ganga river near Bijnor district developed cracks, authorities here diverted traffic on the Pauri-Delhi National Highway for three days starting Saturday.

The bridge connects Bijnor district with Delhi, Meerut and Muzaffarnagar. Confirming the development, Bijnor District Magistrate Sujit Kumar said the stretch had been closed for repairs.

A team of the National Highway Authority of India, led by engineer Dharmesh Saini, inspected the site and said the repair work would start soon.

Militant killed in encounter with security forces in J&K's Baramulla

A militant was killed in an encounter with security forces in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, an Army official said on Saturday.

The encounter took place at Watergam town in north Kashmir's Baramulla district. Some weapons and war-like stores were recovered from the site of the operation, the official said.

The operation was over but the militant was yet to be identified, he said, adding that further details were awaited.

US dollar falls amid rising British pound

The US dollar decreased in late trading on Friday, amid a stronger British pound, which was lifted by upbeat British retail sales data in the first quarter, signalling robust economic growth for the country.

In late New York trading, the euro increased to $1.1245 from $1.1230 in the previous session, and the British pound rose to $1.2994 from $1.2988 in the previous session, Xinhua news agency reported.

The Australian dollar increased to $0.7148 from $0.7146.

The 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy which killed thousands of people is among the world's "major industrial accidents" of the 20th century, a UN report has said, warning that 2.78 million workers die from occupational accidents and work-related diseases each year.

The report released by the the UN labour agency International Labour Organization (ILO) said in 1984, at least 30 tons of methyl isocyanate gas, which was released from the Union Carbide pesticide plant in the Madhya Pradesh capital, affected more than 600,000 workers and nearby inhabitants.

20 injured after Poorva Express derails near Kanpur, rescue operation underway

At least 20 people were injured on Saturday after 12 coaches of the Delhi-bound Poorva Express derailed near Kanpur, railway officials said.

The accident took place at 12.52 a.m. in Rooma, 15 km from Kanpur.

The 12 coaches comprised 10 passenger coaches, one pantry and the power car, according to the officials. Four coaches capsized following the derailment.

The train was running at a speed of 100 km per hour. The cause of the derailment is yet to be ascertained.
