Two persons were killed in a massive explosion at a plywood factory on the outskirts of Vijayawada on Thursday, police said.
The incident occurred in an industrial estate in Surampalli in Gannavaram mandal of Krishna district.
The explosion occurred when a scrap dealer and his son were shifting empty chemical cans into an auto-rickshaw. The victims were identified as Koteshwar Rao and his son Chinna Rao, residents of Raja Rajeswaripet in Vijayawada.

A 30-year-old shopkeeper allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in New Mandi area here as he was worried about money, police said on Thursday.
They said Manu Dhiman was found lying on the road on Wednesday.
His body was sent for postmortem and investigation is on.

Former AMU student leader Sharjeel Usmani, who was lodged in jail in connection with anti-CAA protests, has been released after a district court granted him bail, official sources said on Thursday.
Usmani, who was released on Wednedsay, is the son of a senior faculty member at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
The bail order states that Usmani has a very good academic record and was not arrested from the scene of the crime and no incriminating evidence was found on him at the time of arrest, the sources said
Usmani was arrested on July 10 by the ATS in Azamgarh.He was wanted in different cases under various sections of the IPC in connection with the anti-CAA protests at AMU in December last.

The COVID-19 tally in Thane crossed 1.26 lakh on Thursday after detection of 1,487 new COVID-19 cases in the Maharashtra district, officials said.
Besides, in neighbouring Palghar district, the total number of COVID-19 cases crossed the 25,000-mark, they said.
In Thane, 1,487 people tested positive for coronavirus on Wednesday, taking the total number of cases in the district to 1,26,839, an official from the district collectorate said.

Odisha minister of textile and handicrafts, Padmini Dian, on Thursday said she has tested positive for COVID-19, and was undergoing home isolation.
Dian is the third minister in the state to have contracted the disease. Earlier, higher education minister Arun Kumar Sahoo, and labour minister Susant Singh were diagnosed with the infection.
"I undertook sample tests after developing mild fever and came to know that I have contracted COVID-19 on Thursday morning. I am curretly undergoing home isolation," the Kotpad MLA told PTI over phone.

At least 23 people were killed and many others suffered injuries after torrential rains lashed different parts of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, officials said.
The officials said that most of the casualties were reported on Wednesday from upper parts of Hazara division, where at least 19 people lost their lives while four others died in Buner district of Malakand division, reports Xinhua Dawn news.

Chhattisgarh on Wednesday recorded the worst ever single-day spike in the number of COVID-19 cases with over 2,000 fresh patients and 12 fatalities, including a senior BJP leader and former Mayor.
Now the total number of COVID positive patients in the state has reached 35,330, the Health Department said in its daily bulletin.
The state recorded 12 more COVID-19 fatalities, including former Mayor of Rajnandgaon Shobha Soni, who was a towering BJP leader in the area. The total fatalities in Chhattisgarh have now reached 299.
So far, 35,330 persons have been detected Corona positive in Chhattisgarh of which 18,220 have been discharged from different hospitals. Currently, there are 16,811 active cases in the state.

France has reported more than 7,000 coronavirus cases in 24 hours, the third time the single-day caseload surpassed this figure since the pandemic started in March, health authorities said.
On Wednesday, there were a total of 7,017 new cases, about 2,000 more than the previous day, reports Xinhua news agency.
The new figure, which took the overall nationwide caseload to 331,034, was close to the peak of 7,578 reported on March 31.
The test positivity rate, or the proportion of people tested positive compared with the total number of people tested, stood at 4.3 per cent, identical to the previous day.

Metro rail services in Bengaluru would resume, in phases, from September 7, adhering to the guidelines to contain coronavirus, a top official said on Wednesday.
"The metro service will resume in phases on the east-west and north-south corridors, as per the guidelines of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs," said Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd Managing Director Ajay Seth.
In the first phase from September 7, the 6-coach trains will operate from 8-11 a.m. and 4.30-7.30 p.m. on the east-west route (purple line).
"In the second phase from September 9, the service will also resume on the north-south route (green line) for 3 hours at the same timings," Seth said.

Four more legislators in Punjab tested coronavirus positive, taking their total number to 33 of 117.
"Four of our MLAs, Randeep Nabha, Angad Singh, Aman Arora and Parminder Dhindsa, have tested Covid-19 positive," Chief Minister Amarinder Singh informed in a tweet on Thursday.
"Wish them all a speedy recovery. Fight against Covid-19 is real and the onus is on all of us to observe full precautions, to test, and if found positive, to start treatment quickly," he added.
The legislators who have contracted the disease comprised five ministers in the government.

The overall number of global coronavirus cases was nearing the 26 million mark, while the deaths have increased to over 861,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
As of Thursday morning, the total number of cases stood at 25,934,466 and the fatalities rose to 861,512, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.
The US accounted for the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 6,113,160 and 185,704 respectively, according to the CSSE.
Brazil came in the second place with 3,997,865 infections and 123,780 deaths.
In terms of cases, India ranks third (3,769,523), and is followed by Russia (1,001,965), Peru (657,129), South Africa (630,595), Colombia (624,069), Mexico (610,957), Spain (479,554), Argentina (439,172), Chile (414,739), Iran (378,752), the UK (340,929), France (331,034), Bangladesh (317,528), Saudi Arabia (317,486), Pakistan (296,590), Turkey (273,301), Italy (271,515), Germany (247,411), Iraq (242,284), Philippines (226,440), Indonesia (180,646), Canada (131,941), Ukraine (128,833), Israel (121,464), Qatar (119,206), Bolivia (117,267), Ecuador (115,457) and Kazakhstan (105,944), the CSSE figures showed.
