Mithun Chakraborty's father passes away, actor stuck in Bengaluru

Bollywood star Mithun Chakraborty's father breathed his last in Mumbai on Tuesday, but the veteran actor is currently stranded in Bengaluru owing to the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown.

Basanta Kumar Chakraborty, 95, reportedly died of renal failure after battling health problems for a while now.

Right now, the actor is trying to reach Mumbai to perform the last rites. He was in Bengaluru for a shoot, a timesofindia.com report stated. His eldest son Mahakshay, also known as Mimoh, is in Mumbai along with the rest of the family.

Mithun, whose real name is Gouranga Chakraborty, is the eldest among the four children of Basanta Kumar Chakraborty, who is survived by his wife Santimoyee Chakraborty.

Colombian woman claims Mumbai cop made sexual advances

A 30 year-old Colombian national stuck in Mumbai due to the coronavirus-enforced lockdown has alleged that a junior police officer had made sexual advances on her at a hotel, according to her complaint.

The woman said that she had filed a complaint with the Mumbai Police via an e-mail, "I came to Mumbai on February 22 on a tourist visa and was staying in a Bandra hotel till March 31," the woman stated, she had approached the Colombian embassy in Delhi after she exhausted her money.

"Accordingly, an officer of Mumbai Police helped me check in a lodge in Marol in Andheri on April 1," she said in the complaint.

He kept sending me "flirtatious" messages on my phone, she alleged.

"A couple of times times he tried to force himself on me, but I screamed and pushed him out of the room. The officer told me that he was entitled to have physical relations with me since he is paying the rent for my accommodation and other expenses," she stated, the officer forced the hotel staff to stop providing her food and other articles of daily use.

ED attaches properties worth Rs 51 lakh in bank fraud case

Cracking its whip on economic offenders, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday said that it has attached Rs 51 lakh of seven entities involved in providing a platform to the accused in a bank fraud case to facilitate money laundering.

The ED, in a statement, said that the financial probe agency attached assets worth Rs 51.86 lakh of the seven entities in connection with the bank fraud case against Green Valley Plywood Ltd and others. It said the attached assets include commercial property in Haryana's Gurugram, and balances in the bank accounts.

A cache of arms and ammunition was seized on Wednesday during a search operation in a forest area in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, a senior police officer said.

The combing operation was launched in Sheendhara top in Surankote area after information was received about suspected movement of terrorists, SSP Poonch Ramesh Angral said.

PIL seeks probe by CBI or SIT in Palghar lynching

A public interest litigation was filed in the Bombay High Court on Wednesday, seeking that the probe in the Palghar lynching case be handed over to an independent agency like the CBI or a special investigation team be set up for it.

The petition, filed by advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava, has also sought that the high court monitor the probe and seek periodical reports from the investigating agency.

The public interest litigation (PIL) also demanded that the case be expedited and financial compensation be provided to the family of a car driver, who was among the three persons lynched by a mob.

The incident took place on the night of April 16 when three men - two seers and their driver - were going from Mumbai in a car towards Surat in Gujarat to attend a funeral.

Their vehicle was stopped near a village in Palghar district where the three were dragged out of the car and beaten to death with sticks by a mob on suspicion that they were child-lifters.

Mumbai: Cop booked for abetting constable wife's suicide

A case was registered against a constable from the State Reserve Police Force for allegedly abetting his wife's suicide in western suburb of Goregaon, police said on Wednesday.

An offence was registered against constable Pramod Berde after his wife Surekha, who was a constable with the Government Railway Police, committed suicide on Monday, an official said.

The deceased's brother approached the police with a complaint that Berde had been mentally harassing his sister, thus driving her to take the extreme step, he said.

Berde had found his wife hanging from the ceiling of their home at SRPF camp on Monday, the official added.

"We have registered the case under section 306 (abetment of suicide), but no arrest has been made so far," senior inspector Gitendra Bhavsar of Vanrai police station said.

Two held for raping minor in Bhopal

Two persons were arrested for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl in Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal city, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Saturday night when the victim was walking with a friend and the two accused dragged her into their car, took her to a deserted place and raped her, inspector Rakesh Shrivastava of Habibganj police station said.

The duo then abandoned the girl after threatening her with dire consequences, he said, adding that the victim had to walk 8 km to her neighbourhood.

Mob attacks police team, one policeman injured

The police were attacked in Aligarh on Wednesday morning when they tried to close the shops in the district.

One police man was injured in the incident which took place in the Bhojpura area in Kotwali police circle.

According to reports, a large number of people had come to the vegetable market when a police team reached there and asked the vendors to shut their shops at the specified time.

The people there started pelting stones at the police team and additional forces were rushed in to control the situation.

A police official said that efforts were on to identify persons who had indulged in stone pelting and strict action would be taken against them.

Rupee hits new low of 76.91 a dollar

Rupee slumped to a new low of 76.91 per dollar on Wednesday on the back of a broad-based strength of the greenback.

Weakness in the oil prices and volatility in the global and domestic stock markets weighed on the factors behind depreciation of the Indian currency.

The rupee, has however, recovered and is currently trading around 76.80, against the previous close of 76.83 per dollar.

Outflow of foreign institutional investments also is a major reason for the weakness in rupee. On Tuesday, foreign investors sold stocks worth Rs 2,095.23 crore.

UP Man kills daughter on advice of occultist

In a shocking incident, a man killed his two-year-old daughter because he believed that the 'sacrifice' will bring peace at his home. The man committed the murder on the advice of an occultist.

The father and the occultist have been arrested.

Head constable hits senior with baton

A head constable attacked a senior sub-inspector (SSI) with a baton in Sitapur district on Tuesday after the latter asked him to properly carry out his duties during the lockdown.

The incident happened on Tuesday.

The head constable has been suspended while an FIR against him has been registered at the Kotwali police station area in the district.

Hours after the incident took place, a video of the constable beating his senior went viral on social media.

Superintendent of Police (SP), Sitapur, L.R. Kumar said that the incident took place at the RMP trisection in the Kotwali Nagar area when the SSI senior sub-inspector Ramesh Chauhan scolded head constable Ramashray for not conducting proper checking during the lockdown.

Lightning strike kills man in J-K's Poonch

A 62-year-old man was killed after being struck by lightning in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Wednesday.

Hussain Mohammad was grazing his sheeps and goats in the periphery of his village in Balnoi area near the Line of Control (LoC) when he was hit by lightning on Tuesday evening, they said. The man died on the spot, police said. The body was handed over to the victim's family for last rites after completing legal formalities, they added.

4 terrorists killed in Kashmir encounter

Four terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces at Shopian in South Kashmir on Wednesday, officials said.

"All four terrorists killed in the ongoing operation at Melhura, Shopian," police said in a statement.

Sources said the identity of the killed terrorists was being ascertained.

On Tuesday night a Cordon And Search Operation (CASO) was launched by the police and the Army in Shopian on a specific input about the presence of terrorists.

During the searches the hiding terrorists fired at the security forces which triggered the gunfight.

On early Wednesday morning, two terrorists were killed initially and later two more terrorists were killed. The operation was still going on

Two militants killed in encounter with security forces in J-K's Shopian

Two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district on Wednesday, police said.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the Melhora area of Shopian Tuesday night following information about the presence of militants there, a police official said.

He said the hiding militants opened fire at the security forces, who retaliated, triggering a gun battle.

Two militants have been killed so far in the operation, which was going on till the last reports were received, the official said.

The identity of the slain militants is being ascertained, he added.
