Congress on Thursday emerged victorious in the Nanded-Waghala City Municipal Corporation, winning 73 seats in the 81-seat body.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won on only five seats.
Congress’ performance is an improvement over its 2012 tally, when the party had won 41 seats. The Nanded-Waghala CMC is known to be a stronghold of former Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan.
Celebrations erupted at Congress headquarters in Mumbai, Nanded and other parts of Maharashtra after the results started coming in, according to reports.
