Uttarakhand's Haridwar has reported more than 1,000 coronavirus cases over the past 48 hours after a massive crowd of devotees was seen taking dips into the Ganga river at the Mahakumbh festival. Uttarakhand has reported 1,12,071 cases of coronavirus so far with 1,780 deaths.

According to the data, Haridwar logged 1,002 new infections, 408 on Monday, 494 on Tuesday, taking the city’s active caseload to 2,812.

Nearly a million people have flocked to the banks of the Ganges to participate in the months-long "Kumbh Mela”. On Monday, the day of the auspicious Shahi Snan (ritualistic bath), nearly a lakh had gathered for the holy dip in absolute violation of Covid protocols issued by the Union Health Ministry. People were seen without mask, with no social distancing.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Wednesday tested positive for Covid-19. He is in self-isolation. He took to his official twitter handle to share the news.

A total of 1,84,372 new Covid-19 cases were reported on Wednesday, pushing India’s tally of cases to 1,38,73,825, according to data from the Union Health Ministry.

With 1,027 fatalities in the last 24 hours, the death toll increased to 1,72,085. The number of active cases stand at 13,65,704, while as many as 1,23,36,036 people have recovered from the disease. At least 11,11,79,578 people have been vaccinated so far.
