Aligarh: Anti-CAA protesters clash with police over permission for tents, police resort to teargas

Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh resorted to teargas firing at the anti-CAA protesters when the protesters started throwing stones at them for allegedly not giving permission for tents, NDTV reported. According to Aligarh DM Chandra Bhushan Singh, "Protestors pelted stones at Police vehicles so Police had to resort to teargas to disperse them."

The clash took place in Aligarh's Uparkot Kotwali area when the police denied protesters to erect tents to protect them from the weather as it had rained in Aligarh on Friday.

But after the incident, the DM told the reporters that the situation was under control and the crowd had been dispersed.

"The violence started when a local police officer's vehicle was pelted with stones. Women and children have been sitting outside a police station for 48 hours... we had been requesting them to disperse. We told the women they could hold a protest at a designated spot," DM Chandra Bhushan Singh said, adding that the police officials were investigating the role of Aligarh Muslim University students in instigating the crowd.

“Some women students from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) are behind this, we are trying to identify them. We are ascertaining the damage caused by rioters and it will be recovered from them. The situation is under control now,” Aligarh District Magistrate added.

The Delhi Gate area of Aligarh is the site for peaceful anti-CAA protests where the protest has been going on for a month now.
