Leading the “Peace March” organised by the Congress party against communal riots that have claimed 20 lives till the time of writing this news story in Delhi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi hit the streets and demanded Home Minister Amit Shah’s resignation on Wednesday.

Addressing Congress leaders and activists after the Peace March was stopped by Delhi police midway, Priyanka slammed Home Minister Amit Shah for failing the country and the capital city.

“We wanted to reach to Amit Shah’s residence and demand his resignation but Delhi police (comes under the Home Minister) stopped us,” said Priyanka.

Blaming the BJP leaders for destroying Delhi, Priyanka said, “Delhi is on fire. It is our city…it is our duty to spread peace and extend help to those who have been affected by the riots.”

Saying that maintaining peace and order is the responsibility of the Home Minister, she demanded the Home Minister’s resignation.

“It is the Home Minister’s responsibility to maintain peace in the capital of the country, it is the government’s responsibility to maintain peace in the city, but they failed,” emphasized Priyanka demanding action from the Modi government.

Remembering her grandmother Indira Gandhi, Priyanka said during the time of freedom struggle, Delhi had witnessed riots. And at that time Indira Gandhi had visited Chandi Chowk area.

“She (Indira Gandhi) had visited Hindu as well as Muslim families. She asked only 10 families from both sides to meet over tea…and, in this way she succeeded in restoring peace and love,” said Priyanka appealing to all the Congress members and leaders to learn from history.

Saying that the politics of hatred must be stopped, Priyanka asserted, “It is our duty to awaken the country (against the communal polarisation) …non-violence, communal harmony is the way that Congress party follows”.

Head of the Congress media cell, Randeep Surjewala urged Delhi Police to not “threaten workers of the Congress party” after police denied permission to go ahead.

Earlier it was planned that the Peace March against the communal riots will culminate near Gandhi Samiti in Delhi, however, the march was stopped mid-way by the Delhi Police.
