The number of people in India infected with the dreaded COVID-19 climbed to 2,547 on Friday and the deah toll mounted to 62 as Coronavirus continued to spread across the country.

The most alarming news has come in from Mumbai where 11 CISF personnel on duty at the airport have tested positive and about 142 of them have been quarantined.

While doctors across the country continued to voice their concern about lack of adequate number of masks, PPE suits, gloves, etc., Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked citizens to show their "collective resolve” in fighting the disease by lighting candles, lamps and by flashing torchlights on April 5 at 9 PM. Many critics and citizens found it bizarre as there were no words on what concrete steps the government was taking to mitigate the crisis.

The Coronavirus situation in the country had earlier forced Modi to announce a three-week lockdown starting from March 24.But India’s numbers have been rapidly rising in spite of the measure.

Some open sources put the number of total infected in India close to 3,000 and the death toll higher than 70 but that has not been confirmed by the government.

Globally, the virus continues to wreak havoc as the figure of infected people crossed a million the highest of which were reported from the US at 256,952 cases as the death toll globally surpassed 54,000. Italy has 115,242 confirmed cases an 13,915 Covid-related deaths. Death toll in Spain has also crossed the 10,000-mark and the country has 112,065 positive cases. The death toll in the US has crossed the 6,500 mark and in France, over 5,000 people have died of the virus just in hospitals, not counting deaths at homes and elsewhere.
