The Delhi Police on Monday lodged an FIR against unknown persons for perpetrating violence and damaging public property on the JNU campus on Sunday. This FIR is based on the statement of a Delhi police Inspector who has said that he was present inside the campus during the violence.

According to the statement by Inspector Anand Yadav in the FIR, he was stationed near the administrative block of the varsity along with his team. He further said in his statement that around 3.45 pm he came to know that some masked men were vandalising Periyar hostel. He reached the site with his men and found “40-50 unidentified persons with most of them having their faces covered, were beating up students and vandalising the building”.

“These attackers ran away after seeing the police,” the statement said.

Again, the same police team came face to face with these goons at Sabarmati Hostel around 7 pm where these goons were indulging in violence.

“These people were warned on the megaphone to stop violence but they did not stop and then ran away,” the FIR reads.

The statement however does not throw any light on as to how could police failed to nab even a single one of the assaulters despite encountering them twice. Also, why did the police team not resort to firing tear gas shells or lathicharge to stop the vandals, just like it did in Jamia Millia university last month?

The students living in these hostels and others in the residential blocks have said they could not spot a single security guard let alone a policeman anywhere around when the masked goons were breaking their bones and smashing their window panes.

The varsity administration officials remained unreachable during the entire incident.

Several eyewitnesses have said they saw heavy police presence outside the university gates, but these policemen chose not to enter the campus when the students and teachers inside were being thrashed mercilessly by the goons.

The Delhi Police, however, have rejected the charge of reaching the Jawaharlal Nehru University late despite several pleas by students' unions, asserting that they responded to PCR calls and law-and-order situation professionally to control the violence on the campus.

Addressing reporters, Delhi Police spokesperson Mandeep Singh Randhawa said the internal security of the JNU lies with the varsity administration.

"We have responded to PCR calls, and law-and-order situation professionally," he said.

On the probe initiated after a masked mob attacked students on the campus on Sunday, he said the Crime Branch had found some vital clue and were working on it.

At least 35 students and teachers were badly wounded in the attack. They were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment.
