Rupee slips 13 paise to 71.93 against US dollar

The rupee plunged 13 paise to settle at 71.93 against the US currency on Monday, mainly weighed down by the spike in global crude oil prices.

At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened weak at 72.03 against the US dollar. During the day, it touched a low of 72.11 and finally closed at 71.93 against the US dollar, lower by 13 paise over its previous closing.

The rupee on Friday had closed at 71.80 against the US dollar.

Time has come for BJP govt to go, says Bhupesh Baghel

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Monday condemned the violence in Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University and said it was now time for the BJP government at the Centre to go.

Violence had broken out at JNU on Sunday night as masked men armed with sticks and rods attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus, after which the police conducted a flag march.

Speaking to reporters at the Police Lines helipad here, Baghel said, "Not only in JNU, but what happened earlier in other universities shows the BJP is suppressing students." He said the BJP must remember it was students' power that had brought the party to power earlier, but these same students were now being suppressed by the NDA government.

"The time has now come for the BJP government to go," he said.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association (JNUTA) on Monday demanded the removal of Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar after the attack on students and faculty members by an armed masked mob.

Addressing a press conference, the JNU teachers also demanded an inquiry into the violence on Sunday when a masked mob armed with sticks and rods attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus.

Heavy security at JNU after violence on campus

Massive deployment of security personnel remained in place on Monday at Jawaharlal Nehru University, with authorities only allowing students with valid ID cards inside the campus which had witnessed violence.  According to sources, security was deployed outside the hostels, administration block and other important locations.

Entry of outsiders including media was restricted, the sources said.

Violence had broken out at Jawaharlal Nehru University on Sunday night as masked men armed with sticks and rods attacked students and teachers and damaged property on the campus, prompting the administration to call in police which conducted a flag march.

At least 28 people, including JNU Students' Union president Aishe Ghosh, were injured as chaos reigned on the campus for nearly two hours.

Moderate intensity quake hits Shimla

A moderate intensity earthquake of magnitude 3.6 shook Himachal Pradesh's capital Shimla on Monday morning, the Meteorological Department said.

There was no report of any casualty or damage to property.

The quake's epicentre was at a depth of 10 km north-east in Shimla district, the department said, adding that tremors were felt in and around the district at 5.18 am.
