Indian student in US faces 10 yrs jail for destroying computers at New York college

An Indian student has pleaded guilty to intentionally causing damage of over USD 58,000 to more than 50 protected computers of a college in New York state capital Albany by using a "USB Killer" device.

Vishwanath Akuthota, 27, residing in the United States on a student visa, has been in custody since he was arrested in North Carolina in February this year.

He faces up to 10 years in prison, a fine of up to USD 250,000 and a term of post-imprisonment supervised release of up to three years.

The Congress and NCP in Maharashtra on Friday sought an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over BJP candidate Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur's remark that slain ATS chief Hemant Karkare died in a terrorist attack because she had "cursed" him.

The state unit of the BJP distanced itself from Thakur's remark, saying it considers all those who were killed in the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack as martyrs.

Terming Thakur a "terrorist", NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said the BJP's decision to give her a ticket underscored its "pretence" of fighting terrorism.

Malik, who addressed the media along with state Congress general secretary Sachin Sawant here, alleged that the remarks made by Thakur, who is in the fray from Bhopal Lok Sabha seat, came from the "script" provided by the BJP.

Army rescues policemen, civilian injured in accident in Assam

Four persons, including three policemen, were injured when their car met with an accident while escorting vehicles carrying EVM machines in Karbi Anglong district of Assam, a Defence official said here Friday.

The Army, on receiving a request from the additional director general of Police (Law and Order), Assam, rescued the three policemen and a civilian who were seriously injured in the accident at Bokajan village Thursday.

The injured persons were taken to the nearest Army Hospital at Dimapur, the official said.

ND Tiwari’s son Rohit may have been smothered in his sleep, say police

Rohit Shekhar Tiwari, son of late Uttarakhand chief minister ND Tiwari, died of "asphyxia" as he was strangulated and smothered, according to autopsy report.

Following the postmortem at AIIMS here, police on Thursday registered a case of murder and transferred it to the Crime Branch for investigation, a senior officer said.

The autopsy was conducted by a medical board comprising five senior doctors of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

"The medical board unanimously concluded that the cause of death in this case is asphyxia as a result of strangulation and smothering. It is a sudden unnatural death, placed in the category of homicide," the head of the AIIMS' forensic department, Dr Sudhir Gupta, said.

1 killed, 6 injured in bear attack in Jharkhand

A man was killed and six others were injured Friday after a wild bear went on an attacking spree in Lohardaga district, a police officer said.

The bear first entered Kamle village, under the jurisdiction of Kudu police station, from a nearby forest, attacked and killed the man on the spot, the police officer.

The animal also went to neighbouring villages and attacked people there, he said.

A total of six persons, all residents of different villages, were seriously injured, he said.

13 killed in South Africa church collapse

At least 13 people have died and many injured in South Africa after a wall collapsed at a Pentecostal church at the start of an Easter service, authorities said.

The incident happened on Thursday night in the coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal and emergency medical services spokesperson Robert McKenzie linked the tragedy to heavy rainfall in the area, South Africa’s online news publication News24 reported.

Authorities said 29 people were rushed to hospital after the collapse of the wall at the front of the Pentecostal Holiness Church and six of them were seriously injured.

MP buys 15 lakh tonnes of wheat from 2 lakh farmers

The Madhya Pradesh government has procured 15 lakh metric tonnes of wheat from 2 lakh farmers in the state on a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 1,840 per quintal since March 25. This is 1.60 lakh metric tonnes more than the purchase made over the same period last year. At least 71 per cent of the purchased wheat has also been carefully stored.

The Centre has fixed the MSP at Rs 1,840 per quintal, up from 1,735 per quintal last year. The Kamal Nath-led Congress government in the state is also offering an incentive of Rs 160 per quintal to the wheat farmers over and above the MSP under its ‘Jai Kisan Samriddhi Yojana'.

The state government says that input costs have increased and the MSP does not suffice. Together, the farmers are being paid Rs 2,000 per quintal of wheat and the payments are being made directly into their accounts.

Tribunal serves notice to Jamaat-e-Islami, asks why JeI can't be declared unlawful association

The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal, constituted by the Centre, has issued a show cause notice to Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu Kashmir (JeI), which was banned by the government in February, asking it why the organisation cannot be declared as an unlawful association.

"A notice is hereby given under sub-section (2) of Section 4 of the Act (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act) and you are hereby called upon to show cause, within 30 days from the date of service of this notice, as to why your Association, declared as unlawful, be not adjudicated to be so and why an order confirming such declaration be not made under Section 4(3) of the Act," said the notice issued by Registrar, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal, Lorren Bamniyal, to the JeI.

The notice was issued on April 5.

US President Donald Trump on Friday dismissed unfavourable testimony in the Mueller report on Russian election interference as "fabricated" by his political foes.

Suspect held for rape of Karnataka girl who killed herself

A suspect was arrested in Karnataka's Raichur town for his alleged involvement in the rape of a girl and abetment of her suicide, police said on Friday.

"Suspect Sudarshan Yadav, 25, was arrested on Thursday for the alleged rape and suicide of the victim after her mother Rukmini Devi filed a complaint, alleging his involvement in the crime," police sub-inspector Prakash Dambal told IANS here, about 500 km northwest of Bengaluru.

Yadav, a self-employed youth, was charged under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sent to 14-day judicial remand for interrogation.

"Though Yadav's arrest was based on Devi's statement as he knew her daughter, his name was not found in a suicide note the victim left before she hanged herself on a tree behind a temple on the town's outskirts," Dambal said.

Trading in red chili, mangoes, herbs to hit after cross LoC trade shut

Trading of 21 items like red chili, mangoes, herbs and dry fruits will be hit following the indefinite suspension of cross LoC trade in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said Friday.

Around 280 traders, who were directly involved in the trading will also be affected after the suspension of the business, which has touched Rs 6,900 crore since its inception in 2008.

The 21 items listed for the cross LoC trade include bananas, embroidery items, tamarind, red chili and cumin for exports while imports mainly were almonds, dry dates, dry fruits, herbs, mangoes and pistachio.

AIIMS docs threaten to stop work if administration fails to act on theft complaints

AIIMS resident doctors have threatened to stop work if the administration does not act on rising cases of theft on the campus, saying patient care cannot be delivered in an unsafe and uncooperative environment.

The doctors have also alleged lack of redressal of complaints.

In a letter to the AIIMS administration, the Resident Doctors' Association has demanded implementation of enhanced security for all duty rooms of doctors and immediate monetary compensation, "as promised" for all lost items along with efficient follow up of complaints.

They have also sought transfer of the AIIMS chowki-in-charge with immediate effect.

More than a month after a couple in Uttarakhand refused to accept a newborn girl as their own, insisting that a boy was born to them, DNA tests ended the suspense proving beyond doubt that the baby belongs to them only.

The baby was living with her biological parents only in the meantime, as Usha Negi, the chairperson of the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights had intervened in the matter and asked Aarti Shah to start feeding the baby girl till the final outcome of the DNA tests.

Indian citizen sentenced in US for call centre-linked fraud

A federal judge in Florida has sentenced an Indian citizen to eight years and six months in prison for his involvement in an India-based call centre scam, according to the US Justice Department.

At his sentencing on Thursday, Judge Virginia Hernandez Covington also ordered Hemalkumar Shah, 27, to pay $80,000.

He had been convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft relating to his participation in the Indian call center scam after he admitted his guilt in January.
