At least 30 people were killed and 40 others injured when an overloaded private mini bus skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, police said. Passengers were also sitting on its rooftop.

Kerala government onThursday suspended four officers of Anthoor Municipality in Kannur in connection with the suicide of an NRI businessman, whose new auditorium was not granted ownership certificate by authorities.
The 49-year-old Nigeria-returned businessman, Sajan Parayil, who had spent about Rs 16 crore for the auditorium, had hanged himself at his home Tuesday, after the municipality refused to grant the certificate for his dream project.

Non-banking finance company Sundaram Finance Ltd on Thursday said it will acquire the entire holding of BNP Paribas Personal Finance in their home loan joint venture Sundaram-BNP Paribas Home Finance Ltd.
In a statement issued here, Sundaram Finance said it has reached an agreement with BNP Paribas Personal Finance to acquire its 49.9 per cent stake in Sundaram BNP Paribas Home Finance subject to regulatory approvals.

The Kerala government Thursday expressed willingness to provide 20 lakh litres drinking water to Tamil Nadu, which is facing a water crisis, but the latter has declined it, saying there was "no need for the help at present."
"Since the major water bodies of Chennai has been facing acute water shortage, the Kerala government decided to extend an helping hand," a release issued from the Kerala Chief Minister's office said
Kerala was prepared to transport 20 lakh litres of drinking water from Thiruvananthapuram to Chennai through train, the release added.
Tamil Nadu Municipal Administration minister S P Velumani told reporters in Coimbatore in that deficiencies in some ground water conservation projects were identified at various places, including Chennai, and were being attended to.
As far as Chennai was concerned, he said there was depletion of ground water as the city had witnessed rains 190 days ago.
Water was being supplied through lorries and borewells are being dug wherever the water problem prevails, he added.

Delhi: Woman beaten to death by relative, husband injured
A 23-year-old woman was killed and her husband severely injured in southeast Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin area after they were allegedly beaten up by a relative who suspected that he had lost his job because of the couple, police said Thursday.
However, the accused, Rati Ram, told police that he attacked Sita and her husband, Mangal (25), as he was angry after he got an electric shock from a wire dangling from the gate of their house.
Ram is Mangal's cousin. The incident took place on Wednesday night, the police said.
All three of them worked as contract labourers with the Public Works Department (PWD), they said.

PMO not sharing graft complaints against Ministers: RTI activist
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has declined to share details of complaints of corruption it received against Union Ministers in the first Narendra Modi government, a Right To Information activist said on Thursday.
City-based activist Anil Galgali said that the PMO has denied his request, invoking the RTI Act's Section 7(9) on grounds that it "would disproportionately divert the resources of the public authority as it may be a subjective as well as cumbersome exercise".
"Section 7(9) of the Act specifies that the information shall ordinarily be provided in the form in which it is sought unless it would disproportionately divert the resources of the public authority or would be detrimental to the safety or preservation of the record in question," he said.

Former chief justice of India Dipak Misra called for "stringent laws" and a "collaborative enforcement" on Thursday to safeguard intellectual property rights in the country, which is emerging as a developing economy.
Speaking at a conference on "Intellectual property through collaborative enforcement" organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry and United IPR, he said there was a need to protect those who were creating, inventing or were busy in the field of innovations.
Misra said recognition of talent and its best use in the interest of institutions was the epitome of IPR (intellectual property rights).
"In the present times, the statutory regime is in force and it is in consonance with the framework of progressive countries...That is not enough. Some more stringent laws are required, because we are growing as a developing economic nation," Misra said, adding that IPR was necessary to promote inventions and innovations.

Pentagon confirms Iran shot down US surveillance drone
The Pentagon confirmed on Thursday that Iranian forces shot down a US naval surveillance drone but insisted the aircraft was in international air space, not that of Iran.
The BAMS-D drone was downed by an Iranian surface-to-air missile system while flying in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz, a US Central Command spokesman, Navy Captain Bill Urban, said in a statement.
He said it happened at 2335 GMT on Wednesday.
"Iranian reports that the aircraft was over Iran are false," he added. "This was an unprovoked attack on a US surveillance asset in international airspace."

Renowned jurist dies in Patna

The Union Health ministry has rushed an expert to Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district to assist the administration fight outbreak of Japanese Encephalitis there, officials said on Thursday.
At least 16 persons were affected by JE in West Garo Hills district prompting state Health Minister AL Hek to review the situation emergently on Wednesday evening, they said. The expert hails from Japanese Encephalitis Division of the ministry.
Health Minister AL Hek said, The state nodal officer of the national vector borne disease control program has been asked to also report to the district administration and to provide assistance. Another expert from the Health Ministry is also arriving.
The first two cases of JE were reported almost a week ago in the district. Till Wednesday, 16 cases were tested positive, eight of which are from Tura town, a senior district official said.

"Yes, Vijay was in pain but it has subsided by the evening. Hopefully, there's nothing scary," the source said.
On Thursday, Shankar was seen walking around in slippers with a slight limp. Later he tried jogging wearing gym trainers but gave up after half a lap. He then did some basic exercises as others took part in usual fielding drills as well as net sessions.

The 30-share index, however, pared some losses and was trading 34.59 points, or 0.09 per cent, lower at 39,078.15 at 0930 hours. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty was quoting 23.45 points, or 0.20 per cent, down at 11,668.
In the previous session Wednesday, the BSE gauge settled 66.40 points, or 0.17 per cent, higher at 39,112.74, while the Nifty closed almost flat at 11,691.45.
