SC refers to other bench plea against eviction of forest dwelling tribals in Chhattisgarh

The Supreme Court on Monday referred to another bench a fresh plea seeking a direction to authorities not to evict any forest dweller in Chhattisgarh and to set up an SIT to look into the alleged illegal acquisition of tribals' land.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Deepak Gupta sent the plea filed by Chhattisgarh-based Tarika Tarangini Larka to a bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra, which is already seized of a similar plea relating to eviction of alleged illegal forest dwellers.

"List this matter before the bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra," the bench said, adding that in any case, the February 13 order, directing 21 states to evict 11.8 lakh illegal forest dwellers, has already been stayed by the bench concerned.

The apex court had on March 5 taken cognisance of another plea filed by Larka, seeking a direction to the Centre not to allot possession of any forest land belonging to tribals to anyone other than 'adivasi' residing in that particular area.

Senior bureaucrat Janak Kumar Garg was Monday appointed as the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), entrusted with the task of ensuring safety of metro railways network. Garg is an Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE) officer.

He has been appointed as CMRS in the Commission of Railway Safety till the date of his superannuation, an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said without citing further details.

DMRC staffer jumps to death in Metro Bhawan

A 33-year-old man allegedly committed suicide after jumping from the seventh floor of Metro Bhawan, a police official said on Monday.

"Mahesh Prajapati, a native of Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi was working as a maintenance fitter with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). He had been in depression for some time following a dispute with his wife," said DCP Madhur Verma.

"A missing report was filed for him at the Barakhamba Police Station on Saturday," the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) said.

According to the police, Prajapati stayed in a rented accommodation in Govindpuri.

Gauhati HC quashes criminal proceedings against Union minister Rajen Gohain in rape case

The Gauhati High Court on Monday quashed criminal proceedings against Union Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain in a rape case.

After hearing the minister's petition, Justice Suman Shyam set aside the order passed by the Nagaon Chief Judicial Magistrate on November 16 last year taking cognisance of the criminal proceedings.

An FIR had been lodged against the BJP leader alleging rape, and criminal proceedings were initiated against him.

The Union minister moved the high court challenging the criminal proceedings and subsequent passing of the November 16 order of the CJM.

Dinakaran attack: Retired DSP gets 4-year jail

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Monday sentenced a retired police official to four-year jail in the 2007 attack on the office of Tamil news daily Dinakaran that left three people dead.

Retired Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rajaram was sentenced to imprisonment for dereliction of duties.

On March 21, the court sentenced nine to life imprisonment and seven others to five-year jail terms in the case.

Pak SC to intervene if special court fails to record Musharraf’s statement in treason case

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Monday proposed three options for Pervez Musharraf to record his statement in the treason case against him and said that it would intervene if the special court fails to record the former military dictator's testimony.

A three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Asif Saeed Khosa, said Musharraf's trial will be conducted under any and all circumstances as it expressed annoyance at his continued absence from the hearing.

Justice Khosa said "sometimes Musharraf goes to the hospital and sometimes to his house. After the last hearing, we were sure that he would be admitted to the hospital, he said, adding that it seems his car takes wrong turns while coming to court".

Five killed in truck-tempo collision in Bihar

Five persons were killed and 11 others injured in a truck-tempo collision near Rani Sarai village in Patna district Monday morning, police said.

The injured have been admitted to Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) here, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Sanjay Kumar Singh said. All five deceased were labourers, who were on their way to a site of an NTPC power project at Barh.

"A truck hit the tempo (a three-wheeler autorickshaw), which was ferrying labourers to the power project site, near Rani Sarai village of the district. Five of them were killed on the spot," Singh said, adding that the identities of those killed in the accident were yet to be ascertained.

Mine protected vehicles, 30-seater buses for CRPF convoys in Kashmir: DG

The CRPF will procure a new fleet of mine protected vehicles (MPVs) and small 30-seater buses to ensure safety of its troop convoys in the Kashmir Valley, the chief of the force has said.

The paramilitary has also decided to enhance the number of its bomb detection and disposal squads (BDDS) for its about 65 battalions based in the Kashmir Valley for anti-terror and law and order duties.

These new measures have been chalked out by the force in the aftermath of the February 14 Pulwama terror attack in which 40 personnel travelling in a bus, part of a convoy from Jammu to Srinagar, were killed by a suicide bomber as he exploded a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (IED).

7 detained over alleged forced conversion, underage marriages of 2 teenage Hindu girls in Pak

At least seven people, including a man who assisted in solemnising the wedding of two teenage Hindu girls after their alleged abduction and forced conversions, have been detained in Pakistan, amid reports that the victims approached a court seeking protection.

The two girls, Raveena (13) and Reena (15), were allegedly kidnapped by a group of "influential" men from their home in Ghotki district in Sindh on the eve of Holi. Soon after the kidnapping, a video went viral in which a cleric was purportedly shown soleminising the Nikah (marriage) of the two girls, triggering a nationwide outrage.

On March 20, the girls' family lodged a First Information Report against their alleged forced conversion to Islam.Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has ordered a probe into the incident after the two separate videos started doing rounds on social media.

43 injured as bus overturns in UP's Balrampur

As many as 43 people were injured, six of them seriously, after their bus overturned and fell into a roadside ditch on Tulsipur-Badni road here Monday, police said.

The private bus was on its way to Balrampur from Badni when it overturned while trying to save a motorcyclist near Chaipurwa village, they said.

The injured have been admitted to the local community health centre from where six persons with serious injuries were shifted to the district hospital, police added.

Alert in Goa over Christchurch attacks retaliation

Goa is on alert following a tip off from central intelligence agencies about a possible attack on Israeli tourists in the state in what they called "possible revenge" for the terror attack at the Christchurch mosques in New Zealand last week which killed 50 worshippers, police said on Monday.

Police sources said that the alert had been issued to several states and union territories which have Jewish synagogues, sizeable Jewish residents or attract Israeli tourists.

"We have to keep a look out and secure areas frequented by Israeli tourists as well as a prayer house they have in North Goa. The threat, according to the inputs, comes from a possible attack by Islamic State or the Al-Qaeda to avenge for the New Zealand mosque killings," a senior police official said on condition of anonymity.

Maharashtra: Gangsters fire at toll plaza staff after quarrel

A group of criminals fired four rounds from two pistols at staff manning a toll plaza on the Satara-Pune Highway in the early hours of Monday, police said.

The incident happened around 1am at Anewadi toll plaza, when the criminals, travelling in a Maruti Swift car, picked up a quarrel after being asked to pay toll, said an official. Anewadi toll plaza is around 18 kilometres from Satara and over 90 kilometres from Pune.

"On being asked to pay the toll, an altercation took place. The driver waited for two more cars, carrying his accomplices, to arrive. Once they came, ten men attacked toll plaza staff and fired four rounds from two pistols. No one sustained bullet injuries," the official informed.

RBI Governor to meet fintech firms on growth hurdles

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das will meet financial technology (fintech) companies this week to understand the issues affecting the growth of the sector and will issue guidelines on the regulatory "sandbox" for the sector in the next two months, Das said on Monday.

The fintech sector comprises of mobile payments, money transfers, loans, crowdfunding, asset management, among many others.

"RBI has given nod to seven purely digital loan companies which are basically NBFCs (non-banking finance companies) to commence operations but quite a few of them have not commenced operations and there are other kinds of licences which have also been given where operations have not taken off by everyone, while some of them have not taken off in the expected way, " Das said, inaugurating the Fintech Conclave 2019 organised by Niti Aayog. "I will be meeting them later part of this week and we will have consultations with them to find out what are the impediments, if any, and problems", he said.

A former aide of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim and an accused in the 1993 JJ shootout case Monday died in Jaslok Hospital in south Mumbai, medical authorities said.

Shakeel Ahmed Sheikh, also known as Lambu Shakeel, was suffering from a heart ailment, a hospital official said.

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notice to the CBI on a plea seeking a direction to the probe agency to place the investigation report in the disproportionate assets case against SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav and his sons Akhilesh Yadav and Prateek Yadav.

A bench comprising chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Deepak Gupta asked the CBI to file its response in two weeks with regard to present status of investigation in the assets case against Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh and his two sons.

The bench was hearing a plea file by Congress leader Vishwanath Chaturvedi seeking a direction to the probe agency to apprise the court of the status of the investigation in the case.

SC dismisses plea challenging constitutional validity 'triple talaq' ordinance

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea challenging the constitutional validity of an ordinance which makes the practice of instant 'triple talaq' a punishable offence. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi dismissed a plea of a Kerala-based outfit and said it will not like to interfere.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Ordinance was first notified on September 19 last year, hours after the Union Cabinet had cleared it. Instant 'triple talaq', also known as 'talaq-e-biddat', is an instant divorce whereby a Muslim man can legally divorce his wife by pronouncing 'talaq' three times in one go.

The ordinance making the practice of instant 'triple talaq' a punishable offence was issued for the third time in less than a year on February 21.

AAP govt moves SC seeking constitution of larger bench to decide who controls services in Delhi

The AAP government on Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking constitution of a larger bench to expeditiously decide the issue of who controls the services in Delhi. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi told the Delhi government counsel that it will look into the matter.

The apex court had on February 14 referred the issue of control of services to a larger bench after delivering a split verdict.

The two-judge bench had said that the Centre should have the final word on posting and transfer of bureaucrats in the national capital administration, but their disagreement on finer details resulted in a split verdict and the matter got referred to a larger bench.

Three Jaish terrorists arrested in J&K

Three Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorists were arrested by security forces from the outskirts of the city, police said. They were nabbed on Sunday.

"Three car-borne terrorists affiliated with proscribed terror outfit JeM were arrested by police and security forces at Lawaypora (on Srinagar-Baramulla road) based on a credible input," a police spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said ammunition, including live rounds, was seized from the terrorists identified as Rayees Hurrah, Shahid Bhat and Ishaq Lone.

Sensex falls over 325 points on weak global cues

The benchmark BSE Sensex plunged over 325 points and slipped below the 38,000-mark in early trade on Monday, in tandem with weak global cues and depreciating rupee.

The 30-share index, which had lost 222.14 points on Friday, was trading lower by 325.49 points, or 0.85 per cent, at 37,845.24.

Reflecting the bearish mood, all the sectoral indices, led by realty, metal and auto, were trading in the negative zone with losses of up to 1.57 per cent. Similarly, the NSE Nifty fell 103.90 points, or 0.78 per cent, to 11,353 after hitting a low of 11,342.90.

Two injured in J&K petrol pump robbery

Two people were injured on Monday when robbers looted a petrol pump in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district, police said.

Two attendants were injured during the looting of the cash counter of the petrol pump in Chadwal area just off the Jammu-Pathankote highway.

A manhunt was launched to trace the robbers, the police said.
