Earthquake of magnitude 8.0 hits Peru

An earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 on the Richter scale hit northern Peru on Sunday at 07:41 UTC.

The quake, at a moderate depth of 114 kilometers struck at 2:41 am, 80 kilometers southeast of the village of Lagunas and 158 kilometers east-northeast of the larger town of Yurimaguas.

Earthquakes that are closer to the surface generally cause more destruction. The Peruvian government's emergency department tweeted that it registered a magnitude of 7.2, and that the quake was felt in the city of Callao, and the capital, Lima.

Man held for cyber stalking ex-classmatein Hyderabad

A 23-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly cyber stalking and sexually harassing his former intermediate classmate on social media after she rejected his proposal, police said Sunday.

The woman had recently blocked him on WhatsApp for sending 'unscrupulous messages' following which he allegedly created a fake facebook account, posted photos of her with sex soliciting comments as status and collected money from some through wallets, police said.

The CBI had told the Supreme Court that custodial interrogation of Kumar was necessary as he was not cooperating with the probe and he was “evasive” and “arrogant” in answering queries put to him during his questioning by the agency

CBI issues look out notice against Rajeev Kumar

The CBI has issued a Look Out Notice against former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, whose custodial interrogation it has sought in connection with the Saradha scam, to prevent him from leaving the country, officials said on Sunday.

All airports and immigration authorities have been alerted by the CBI this week to prevent him from leaving the country and intimate the agency on any possible move, they said.

The agency wants custodial interrogation of Kumar, a 1989-batch IPS officer, in connection with Rs 2500 crore Saradha ponzi scam as he was heading the Special Investigation Team of West Bengal Police to probe the case before CBI took over, they said.

Cong worker killed by suspected Naxals in Chhattisgarh

A local Congress worker was brutally killed by suspected Naxals in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, police said on Sunday.

Sahdev Samrat (30), a native of Thothapara area, was attacked with sharp-edged weapons on Saturday night when he went to attend a wedding in the nearby Kostapara area in Bhairamgarh town, a local police official said.

Woman jumps into canal with son, 5, after objectionable photo goes viral

A 30-year-old woman jumped into a canal with her five-year-old son apparently after her objectionable photo had gone viral on social media, police said Sunday.

They said a photo of the woman with her former lover had gone viral on social media, following which she jumped into the canal in Khatoli town in Muzaffarnagar district Saturday.

The minor has been rescued but the woman is still untraceable. The woman got married to another person in 2012. A search is under way to find the woman.

Pakistan violates ceasefire in J&K's Nowshera, one civilian injured

A teenager was injured Sunday in small arms firing by the Pakistan Army along the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. The firing from across the LoC started in Nowshera sector around midnight, prompting retaliation by the Indian Army, a police official said.

He said Mohammad Ishaq (18) was hit by a bullet from the Pakistani side while he was sleeping inside his house at village Pokharni.

The injured boy was immediately evacuated to hospital and his condition was stated to be "stable", the official said.

Former village head shot dead in Amethi

A former village head was allegedly shot dead by two unidentified men in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi district, police said on Sunday.

Additional Superintendent of Police Daya Ram said Surendra Singh (50), the former head of Baraulia village was shot at around 11.30 pm on Saturday. The incident took place just days after Smriti Irani won the Lok Sabha elections from the Amethi parliamentary constituency.

He was referred to Lucknow in a serious condition and he succumbed to his injuries during treatment, the police officer said, adding two people have been detained in connection with the incident and further investigation was underway.

Baraulia village was in news during campaigning in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections. Locals claim that Surendra Singh was considered close to Smriti Irani. Sources said that Singh had worked for Smriti Irani during the recently concluded general elections 2019. The police are yet to find a motive behind the killing. Raids are being conducted in adjoining villages to trace the accused.

A heavy deployment of forces has been made in the village in view of prevailing tension.

Amethi Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar did not rule out the possibility of the crime being a political murder. "The incident cannot be ruled out to be a political murder. All aspects are being probed. There can be old enmity as well," the SP sai

On May 24, a Samajwadi Party member of the zila panchayat Vijay Yadav had been shot dead in Ghazipur.
