Son of a labourer employed under the rural job guarantee scheme (MNREGA) has become the first student of his village to crack the IIT.

He obtained 10,740th rank in JEE-Main and is now aiming to pursue engineering from NIT.

Lekhraj Bheel comes from Mogayabeeh Bhilan village in Jhalawar district. His father Mangilal Bheel and mother Sardari Bai are both illiterate and are unaware what the engineers do.

The Opposition Congress in Assam on Thursday slammed the BJP-led government in the state for not allowing former chief minister Tarun Gogoi to address a press conference in his room in Assam House in New Delhi.

The former three-time Assam Chief Minister wanted to interact with a few electronic media journalists in his room on Thursday. The Assam House officials, however, did not allow him, forcing him to address the media on the streets in front of the Assam House.

"This is undemocratic. There is no rule which restricts holding of a press conferences in Assam House," said APCC spokesperson Rituparna Konwar.

1 dead in Ludhiana jail clash; inmates post live videos on FB

One person died and five prisoners and six police personnel received injuries after a bloody clash erupted between two groups of inmates in Ludhiana Central Jail on Thursday as they pelted stones at each other.

The inmates even made video clips of the incident on their cellphones and posted them live on Facebook.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, who is in New Delhi, has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident, to be conducted by the Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana. Taking serious note of the incident, the Chief Minister asked for a detailed probe to identify the instigators of the violence.

Slogans rent air outside HC as Maratha quota is upheld

Chants of "Jai Maratha", "Ek Maratha Lakh Maratha" reverberated outside the Bombay High Court Thursday as it upheld the validity of reservation for the Maratha community in government jobs and education.

As the division bench of Justices Ranjit More and Bharati Dangre pronounced the order, there was jubilation outside the court among supporters of the reservation.

They greeted each other with hugs and hand-shakes and the chants of "Jai Maratha", "Ek Maratha Lakh Maratha" (One Maratha is equal to one lakh Marathas) were shouted.

Amid euphoria, some Maratha activists on the court premises waved saffron flags with picture of warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji.

Mumbai court defers decision on bail for Kerala CPI-M leader's son in rape case

For the second time, a court in Mumbai on Thursday deferred orders on the anticipatory bail plea filed by Kerala CPI-M leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan's son Binoy Kodiyeri, in the rape case against him.

The court however directed that there should be no arrest of Binoy till Monday.

On June 21, when the case came up at the Dindoshi court in Mumbai, after hearing both sides, the court posted the case for the June 24, but later it was deferred to Thursday.

Three arrested for supplying arms and ammunition

With the arrest of three suspects, Delhi police on Thursday claimed to have busted an inter-state network of illegal arms and ammunition suppliers.

The police identified the three as Khilafat Ali (56), Furkan (49), both hailing from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, and Khalid (28), a resident of UP's Hapur. Nineteen semi-automatic pistols of .32 bore and two revolvers with 15 spare magazines were recovered from the accused.

"We have launched a special drive to nab illegal arms suppliers following several cases where these weapons were used in the capital and the NCR," said Pramod Singh Kushwah, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Special Cell. He said these weapons are smuggled from Sendhwa, Khargone, Dhar and Burhanpur in Madhya Pradesh and Munger in Bihar.

Mistaken identity lands Assam woman in detention camp for 3 years

A woman from Assam's Chirang district, sent by a foreigners' tribunal to a detention camp three years back on suspicion that she was an illegal infiltrator after being mistaken for someone else of the same name, has now been freed.

"I am happy that I can take care of my daughter now. She is physically challenged, she needs my help always," said Madhubala Mondal, 59, after her release on Wednesday.

Mondal, a widow who worked as a domestic help, had to spend three years at a detention camp in Kokrajhar district after she was declared a foreigner by a Foreigners' Tribunal in March 2016.

11 students killed in accident in J&K's Mughal Road

Eleven students of a private computer training institute were killed while seven others were injured on Thursday in a road accident on Mughal Road in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district.

Police sources said 11 students, including nine girls, were killed and seven were injured when a vehicle carrying the students of a private computer training institute on excursion went out of control near Pir Ki Gali on Mughal Road and plunged into a deep gorge.

"A rescue operation was launched immediately. The injured have been shifted to a hospital in Srinagar for treatment," the sources said.

Mizoram Assembly adjourned sine die

The third session of the eighth Mizoram Legislative Assembly which commenced from June 12 was adjourned sine die by Speaker Lalrinliana Sailo on Thursday.

The state annual budget for the financial year 2019- 2020 amounting to Rs 10,692,30 crore was presented by Chief Minister Zoramthanga, who also holds charge of the Finance portfolio, on June 13 in the Assembly and was unanimously passed on Wednesday.

One bill and two amendment bills were passed during the session.

Freedom fighter Mohammed Bazi dies at 102

Well known freedom fighter Mohammed Bazi passed away on Thursday at the age of 102 following illness in Odisha's Nabarangpur district.

Bazi, who was unmarried, breathed his last at his residence. He was laid to rest with full state honours in Nabarangpur.

Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Bazi had participated in the freedom movement against British rule and was arrested several times for his anti-British activities.

Mumbai staring at severe water crises as lakes dry up

In an ominous statement, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday warned of an impending water crisis looming over the country's commercial capital owing to delayed monsoon.

Left with barely 4.95% water stocks in all the lakes, the BMC has now started using its precious water reserves to quench the thirst of the city's 17 million people.

"The civic administration has made arrangements of supplying water to the citizens up to July-end using reserve stocks of water. All are requested to cooperate and the citizens must use water carefully," the BMC said in an official appeal.

Oscar winning Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio, known for his environmental activism, has raised awareness about the ongoing water crisis in Chennai. DiCaprio took to Instagram to share a photograph of a dry well.

Protests at MCF as news of rlys' proposal to corporatise production units gains traction

Railways' most modern production unit, the Modern Coach Factory in Raebareli, producing around 2,000 coaches each year, is seething with anger over the ministry's 100-day plan proposing corporatisation of its manufacturing units and workshops.

On Tuesday, when the director general, personnel, visited the factory, he was accosted by over 2,500 workers who raised "go back" slogan.

L N Pathak, the general secretary of Rail Coach Factory Men's Union, Modern Coach Factory, said, "This is unit is aiming to produce 2,158 coaches in the current fiscal. Two years back we used to produce 750. Imagine the growth. There are 2,500 staff here, around 1,700 of whom were directly posted through RRBs. They take pride in the fact that they are part of the railways' most modern and technologically advanced factory."

"Now, we get to know, not from railways but from news reports, that they are planning to hive us off to companies. We will resist this. While work has not been affected yet, we are holding rallies, meetings and protesting before work at 7:30 am, during lunch and after work," he said.

10 jail inmates injured in clash in Punjab

At least 10 inmates of a jail in Punjab's Ludhiana city sustained injuries on Thursday in a clash between two groups, police said.

Security has been heightened in the Central Jail after the clash, a police officer said, adding the cause of provocation is yet to be ascertained.

The incident in the jail occurred in less than a week after Mohinder Pal Bittu, the prime suspect in a case relating to the desecration of Guru Granth Sahib in Bargari in 2015, was beaten to death in the high-security prison in Nabha, near Patiala, by a murder convict and a murder accused on June 22.

30 die in Bihar lightning strikes

At least 30 people were killed and over a dozen others injured in incidents of lightning strikes across Bihar in the last 24 hours, an official said on Thursday.

The deaths occurred in Bhagalpur, Begusarai, Saharsa, Purnea, Araria, Katihar, Jamui, Khagaria, Madyepura, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, Mitigari and Gaya districts, the state disaster management department official said.

"The state government has ordered an ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each to the victims' kin," the official added.

Four people die while cleaning septic tank in Haryana

Four municipal corporation sweepers, three of them part-time workers, died of asphyxia at a public division disposal plant’s septic tank near Meat Market in Rohtak Wednesday, police said.

The deceased have been identified as permanent employee Anil Saini, 39, of Kaithal; part-time workers Sanjay Kumar, 26, of Uttar Pradesh , Dharmender, 35, and Ranjit Dhanak, 28, of Rohtak.
