Gurugram Hindu bodies shut meat shops for Navratri

With the 9-day Chaitra Navratri festival starting on Saturday, Hindu organisations forcibly shut around 180 meat and chicken shops at different locations of Gurugram, demanding they remain closed during the festival.

Members of the Hindu Sena brandishing batons, hockey sticks, swords and iron rods were seen pulling down shutters of several meat and chicken outlets.

Ritu Raj, chief of the Hindu Sena's Gurugram unit, said around 200 members of different Hindu outfits assembled at the Shiva temple on Old Railway Road in the morning and marched in different directions to shut meat shops.

Rajasthan: Union minister among 18 who filed nominations on Saturday

Eighteen candidates filed their nominations on Saturday for the first phase of the Lok Sabha election in Rajasthan.

Among the prominent leaders who submitted their papers include Union minister and BJP leader Gajendra Singh Shekhawat from Jodhpur, Congress' Raghuveer Singh Meena from Udaipur and Devkinandan Gurjar from Rajsamand seats.

As per the Chief Electoral Office, 18 candidates nominations on Saturday. A total of 33 candidates have filed nominations for 13 parliamentary constituencies.

Last date for filing nomination is Tuesday and withdrawals can be done till Friday.

Rajasthan will go to polls in two phases on April 29 and May 6.

Political parties flayed for ignoring environment

Taking a dig at the political parties for ignoring the green agenda, environmentalists and activists on Saturday said MPs from West Bengal asked only 197 environment related questions in Parliament in the last five years, not even one each in every year on an average.

"In the past five years, MPs from West Bengal asked just 197 environment-related questions. Had they asked one each in every year, the total could have been higher," said Naba Dutta, Secretary, Sabuj Manch, a network of organisations and people fighting for the green cause.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Saturday called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "liar", who has been blabbering lies in the last five years and not fulfilling a single promises made during the last general election in 2014.

Banerjee also mocked Modi's 56 inch chest rhetoric and wryly said even Ravan (demon king) had a big chest does that mean we would support "Ravan raj" in the country.

She criticised Election Commission over removal of police officers in Bengal and challenged the poll panel to remove her first.

Eight of a family killed in road accident in Bihar

Eight members of a family including three minors were killed and eight others were injured when their pick-up van was hit by a truck in West Champaran district on Saturday, officials said.

The incident occurred near Bargajwa village on Ramnagar-Lauriya road when 14 persons of a family, were going to attend a wedding reception when a tipper truck hit the van from behind. Two other persons passing through the area were also injured in the mishap, they said.

People in the Maldives voted in a crucial parliamentary election on Saturday that many hope will help President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih overcome a coalition split that has hampered his efforts to restore political freedoms and tackle corruption.

Some voters who had lined up earlier were allowed to cast their vote well after balloting officially ended at 6 pm in the Indian Ocean archipelago nation known for its luxury resorts, said Ahmed Akram, an election official. He said voter turnout was over 78 per cent.

Dacoits beat up petrol pump staff, loot Rs 1.5 lakh in Nashik

Four persons working at a petrol pump in Maharashtra's Nashik district were Saturday assaulted and Rs 1.5 lakh cash looted by dacoits, police said.

The incident happened at Shirwadephata petrol pump on the Mumbai-Agra National Highway at around 3am, an official said.

"The dacoits, riding motorcycles, assaulted the petrol pump staff and snatched Rs 1.5 lakh cash. A case has been registered with Pimpalgaon police station and efforts are on to nab the dacoits," he said.

Seven persons including two women were injured as a wild boar attacked them in Odisha's Kendrapara district on Saturday, Forest officials said.

The incident occurred when the victims were engaged in farming operation in the agriculture field in Teragaon village under Mahakalpada area of the district, the officials said.

Later angry people captured the animal and hacked it death, they said.

Three killed in road accident in UP's Baghpat

Three persons were killed after being hit by an unidentified vehicle on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway near Sarfabad here, police said on Saturday.

The three men, identified as Surendra, Umesh and Dev Kumar (all in their 40s), were changing the tyres of their mini truck on Friday night when the vehicle hit them, SSP Ranvijay Singh said.

All the three died on the spot, the SSP said, adding that investigations are on.

Koli gets 11th death sentence in Nithari murder case

A CBI court awarded death sentence -- 11th -- to Surender Koli in the Nithari serial killing case, here on Saturday.

CBI Prosecutor J.P. Sharma said it was the 11th case in which Koli has been ordered to be hanged till death. But the court acquitted the co-accused Maninder Singh Pandher, due to lack of evidence.

According to Sharma, a 10-year-old girl went missing after she had gone to deliver 'ironed' cloths at D-5, residence Pandher, where his domestic help Koli was living, on June 21, 2005.

Mehbooba appeals to people to reject those attempting to fragment J-K

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said the society needs to collectively reject the nefarious moves aimed at fragmenting Jammu and Kashmir to weaken the special status of the state.

"Recent statement of some right-wing political leaders using lure of sops for a particular community, tactical mandate for Lok Sabha elections by some parties and fielding of proxies clearly point to a design to fragment the popular mandate of the people of the state," Mufti said addressing a party workers' convention at Tangmarg in Baramula Lok sabha constituency.

She said such forces want to "peddle lies" that only Kashmiri-speaking Muslims of the Valley are for the special status of the state.

Terrorists barge into army jawan's home, shoot him dead Srinagar

An army jawan was on Saturday shot dead inside his home in the Sopore area of Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir by terrorists, police said.

The terrorists barged into the residence of Mohammad Rafi Yatoo, an army jawan, and fired at him indiscriminately, a police official said.

He said Yatoo was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to injuries.

SC notice to Centre on coal mining in Chhattisgarh

The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to the Centre on a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking cancellation of coal block allocation in Chhattisgarh to Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (RRVUNL) and the mining operations by the Adani Enterprise Limited (AEL) for violating the environmental clearance granted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

The petitioner has also sought the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into it.

After hearing the petition, an apex court Bench, comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, ordered issuance of the notice to the Centre and other stakeholders.

The petitioner urged the court to ask the RRVUNL to cancel its joint venture and coal mining delivery agreement with AEL and Parsa Kente Collieries Limited (PKCL), a joint venture between the RRVUNL and the AEL, with AEL being the majority stakeholder.

Transfer of Bengal top cops highly arbitrary says Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday termed the Election Commission (EC)'s decision to transfer four West Bengal IPS officers, including the Kolkata Police Commissioner, and bar them from poll duty as "highly arbitrary, motivated and biased towards BJP".

Banerjee said the flow of events raise "strong doubts" over the Commission's functioning to conduct free and fair polls in the state.

"The decision of the Commission is highly arbitrary, motivated and biased. We have every reason to believe that the decision of the Commission is at the behest of the ruling party at the Centre, i.e. the BJP," Banerjee said in a letter to the EC.

The Delhi Police Special Cell has arrested a 31-year-old alleged drug supplier from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh who was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000, officials said Saturday.

The accused has been identified as Rashid Khan, a resident of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, they said.

On March 28, 2016, police arrested one Ajay Kumar and Parveen Kumar, members of a drug syndicate from Moti Nagar and recovered a huge consignment of narcotics, Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) said.

Jammu and Kashmir's former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday blamed Peoples Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti for the National Investigation Agency (NIA) summons to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq in the terror funding case.

BSF jawan shoots himself dead, injures 2 colleagues in Tripura

A BSF constable from Andhra Pradesh committed suicide with his service rifle, after firing at two of his colleagues in a camp at North Tripura district, police said on Saturday.

The constable, B Durga Rao (38), was talking to a family member when he suddenly shot at one of his colleagues, Anil Kumar, on Friday night in Panisagar area, SP Bhanupada Chakraborty said.

Hearing the sound of gunfire, another BSF jawan, Dhanraj, rushed to the spot to overpower him and during an ensuing scuffle, Rao shot at himself and died on the spot, Chakraborty said.

Dhanraj also received bullet injuries in the tussle, he said.

ASAT test poses no threat to ISS: DRDO chief G. Satheesh Reddy

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Chairman G. Satheesh Reddy said on Saturday that there was no possibility of debris from the anti-satellite (ASAT) test conducted by India on March 27 hitting the International Space Station (ISS).

He said there were chances of some debris going up but since 10 days have passed since the launch, there was no possibility of it posing any threat to the ISS.

The risk analysis simulation based on an internationally accepted software also showed that there was no threat to the space station. The DRDO chief said that all the debris should be dissolved within 45 days.

7 from J&K crack UPSC Civil Services 2018

Seven aspirants from Jammu and Kashmir have cracked the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) civil service exam-2018.

The list of 759 successful candidates made public by the UPSC on Friday included seven names belonging to the Jammu region.

Rehana Bashir from Poonch has secured the 187th rank in the merit list. She is an MBBS graduate.

Abhishek Augustya, who secured the 286th position and Sunny Gupta the 320th, are both from Jammu city.

UP: Woman attacked after son elopes with girl

A woman was attacked with sharp-edged weapons by a group of people after her son eloped with a girl of his village, police said on Saturday.

Guddu eloped with a girl of Vilayat Nagar village. Infuriated over the incident, a group of villagers attacked his mother on Friday, injuring her seriously.

According to Station House Officer G S Gill, police have registered a case. The injured woman is undergoing treatment at a hospital.
