Rain had already been predicted for Sunday. The pitch and square had already been covered 30 minutes ahead of the start of play. With the rain getting persistent, the first session could get washed out.
Joe Root made 109, top-scoring in England's 303 in the second innings. Root had earlier scored the most runs in his side's first innings total of 183.
India, after a first-innings total of 278, are at 52/1 and need 157 runs to complete a victory in the first Test.

Maha: One killed in factory wall collapse in Palghar
A worker was killed after the wall of a factory collapsed following a boiler blast in an adjoining unit in Palghar in Maharashtra, police said on Sunday.
The incident took place in Waliv area of Palghar on Saturday, an official at the Mira-Bhayander Vasai-Virar police control room said.
The powerful explosion in a boiler at an engineering unit rocked the area and caused the wall of an adjoining factory to crash, he said.
A worker, identified as Mehmood Mohammad Khan (18), died on the spot, he said.
Local firemen and police rushed to the spot for rescue and relief work.
The body was sent for postmortem, the police said.
The Waliv police have registered a case under various Indian Penal Code sections, including 304A (causing death by negligence), they added.
Undertrial dies in UP jail
An undertrial prisoner in the Pratapgarh district jail died after suddenly falling sick.
Jail officials said that Budhai Saroj ,60, a resident of Sangramgarh police station area, was lodged in the jail along with his grandson for the past two months for their alleged involvement in a life-threatening attack on a rival.
District Jail Superintendent R.P. Chaudhary said, "Budhai complained of breathlessness, following which he was taken to the medical college, where he died during treatment."
The family of the deceased has been informed, authorities said, adding the body was sent for post mortem on Saturday.

Maha: Landslide in Thane; no casualty, 6 houses damaged
At least six houses were damaged after a landslide in Kalwa area here in Maharashtra on Sunday, but no one was injured, a civic official said.
The landslide took place in the Indira Nagar locality following which huge stones rolled down a hillock in the area, Thane Municipal Corporation's regional disaster management cell (RDMC) chief Santosh Kadam said.
Local firemen and a team of the RDMC rushed to the spot.
As a precautionary measure, residents of 20 to 25 houses in the area were shifted to a civic school in Gholai Nagar, the official said.
