About 1.17L students to appear for NEET in TN

In order to avoid any last minute problems and also taking into consideration the coronavirus safeguard measures, many medical college aspirants in Tamil Nadu reached the entrance test centres well ahead of time in Tamil Nadu on Sunday.

About 1.17 lakh students have applied to write the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) in the state to gain admission in a medical college.

There are about 240 exam centres in 14 cities in the states.

3,913 new corona cases in Odisha, total over 1.5 lakh

Odisha's coronavirus cases crossed the 1.5 lakh-mark as it reported 3,913 more cases in the last 24 hours, the Health department said on Sunday.

The corona cases now total 1,50,807, including 34,849 active ones and 1,15,279 recoveries.

The COVID-19 death toll reached 626 as 10 more patients succumbed to the infection in the last 24 hours, the department said.

While three deaths were reported from Khordha district, two patients died in Cuttack district, and 1 each in Balasore, Ganjam, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj, and Sonepur districts.

Of the new cases, 2,348 were reported from quarantine centres and 1,565 were local contacts

Former Union minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh passed away Sunday morning while undergoing treatment in New Delhi. Singh, who had recently resigned from RJD , had fallen critically ill after developing post-COVID complications. Singh’s condition had deteriorated on Friday night, and he was admitted to AIIMS on Saturday with complaints of recurrent cough. He was later put on Ventilator.

Couple shot, injured by woman's father in UP

A couple who married against the wishes of the woman's family was shot and injured by her father at their residence in Saidnagar in Rampur district, police said on Sunday.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Arun Kumar said: "Prashant Kumar had married a woman from Kashipur in Uttarakhand in early September. The woman's family was unhappy with the marriage. As per the preliminary information, her father shot and injured them on their upper arms on Saturday. The couple has been referred to another medical facility from the district hospital."

He said that police was investigating.

98 new corona cases in Agra, total nears 4K

An SDM and four police officials were among 98 more persons who tested positive for coronavirus in Agra in the past 24 hours, taking the total cases so far in the district to 3,933, officials said on Sunday.

Of the total corona cases, 3,037 patients had recovered whereas another 113 succumbed to the disease. The latest death was of a 48-year-old woman in Jagdish Pura locality on Saturday evening.

In all, 1,47,555 samples have been tested so far, with a positivity rate of 2.67 per cent. The recovery rate in the district has gone down to 77.22 per cent from over 80 per cent a fortnight ago.

NSA to be invoked against assailants of Dalit farmer

The assailants of a 30-year-old Dalit farmer, Ram Vilas Rawat, in Malihabad, on the outskirts of Lucknow, will be booked under the stringent National Security Act (NSA).

The SHO of local Malihabad police station has been suspended for negligence.

The five accused-Ghulam Ali, Mustaqeem, Mufeed, Shanu, and Guddu-drove their bikes over a hosepipe on Thursday night. Ali and his accomplices attacked Rawat when he objected.

Rawat was seriously injured in the attack and succumbed on his way to the Malihabad community health centre.

25-yr-old man rapes elderly woman in UP's Ballia district

Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly raping and thrashing an elderly woman aged 70 in Ballia district.

SHO of the Haldi police station, Satyendra Rai, said the youth forcibly entered the woman's house at around 4 a.m. and allegedly raped her.

The incident took place on Saturday.

UP history-sheeter arrested from Kolkata

History-sheeter Surendra Kalia, who had allegedly staged an attack on himself in Lucknow to get police gunner and had escaped to evade arrest, has been found hiding in Kolkata in West Bengal.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Lucknow, Somen Barma told reporters, "A team has been sent to seek remand of Surendra Kalia from Kolkata. Kalia carries a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his head. He also ran an extortion racket and took railway contracts."

Kalia was arrested from a hotel in Jadavpur police station area on August 31.

Kolkata Police chanced upon Kalia while conducting a drive to enforce lockdown. He was living in the hotel under the false identity of Surendra Kumar, said Kolkata Police officials.

Minor hacked to death for using pump set

A 15-year-old boy was allegedly hacked to death with an axe by his cousin brother in Nagla Kondar village in Mainpuri over a trivial issue of using pump for irrigating their fields.

The police have registered an FIR in the case and the main accused has been detained for questioning.

According to reports, the Robin Yadav, a student of class 11, had gone to plough his field when he was attacked by his cousin brother Rahul Yadav (26).

There was a dispute between them over using the pumping set for irrigating their fields, which had been distributed between two families. However, the ownership of the pump set is not yet clear, said police.

198 new Covid-19 cases in Noida; infections top 10,000

The number of people infected by COVID-19 has surpassed 10,000 in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar district after 198 new cases were detected, officials said.

District Information Officer Rakesh Chauhan on Saturday said 198 people tested positive for COVID-19 since Friday, taking the tally of infected people to 10,204, while 117 patients have recovered.

A total of 1,990 patients are being treated in different COVID hospitals in the district.

At least 7,968 patients have been discharged in the district, so far.

Noted Tamil scribe Sudhangan dies at 63

Senior Tamil journalist Rangarajan popularly known as 'Sudhangan' died here on Saturday following a brief spell of illness.

He was 63.

He was admitted to a private hospital a couple of days back where he passed away.

Sudhangan began his journalistic career with a Tamil publication called 'Dhisaigala' and later joined Kumudam magazine.

It was here he changed his name to Sudhangan as the publication had another person by name Rangarajan.

Sudhangan later joined the Vikatan group and left as the Senior Editor of investigative magazine Junior Vikatan to join Tamil daily Dinamani as its editor.

Subsequently he became the Editor of Tamizhan Express.

1,007 new COVID-19 cases reported in UAE; 78,849 in total

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday announced 1,007 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 78,849.

At the same time, 521 more patients have recovered from the virus, taking the tally of recoveries in the UAE to 68,983, UAE's Ministry of Health and Prevention said, Xinhua reported.

It also confirmed one more death, pushing the country's death toll to 399.

The UAE was the first among the Gulf countries to report COVID-19 cases.

France's COVID-19 daily infections top 10,000

France reported 10,561 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, the country's biggest ever single-day tally, official data showed on Saturday.

The new daily total has beat a previous record of 9,843 set two days ago, confirming an upward trend reported since July, Xinhua reported.

The virus had also claimed 17 more lives in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 30,910.

France now has 373,911 confirmed cases since the pandemic outbreak, with 772 clusters still under investigation, of which 86 were detected in the past 24 hours.

Brazil reports over 131,000 deaths from COVID-19

Brazil registered 814 new deaths from the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the last 24 hours, which brought the death toll to 131,210, the Ministry of Health reported on Saturday.

The ministry also said that the number of cases rose to 4,315,687 after the incorporation of 33,523 new cases, Xinhua reported.

Similar to last weekend, high temperatures on the country's coasts brought thousands of people to the beach, particularly in the states of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, despite warnings to respect social distancing and avoiding crowds.

Weeks after discharge, Amit Shah re-admitted to AIIMS

Two weeks after his discharge, Home Minister Amit Shah has been re-admitted to All India Institute for Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after complaining breathing issue on Saturday, multiple sources told IANS.

However, the hospital did not come on record to confirm this.

The sources told that Shah was admitted around 11 p.m. on Saturday night. As per the sources, he is being kept in CN tower, a facility reserved for VVIPs. Shah is getting treatment under Dr Randeep Guleria, director of AIIMS. His condition is said to be stable now.
