4 held for killing farmer

A 50-year-old farmer was allegedly killed over property here, police said on Monday after arresting four people, including the man's nephew and sister-in-law.

The farmer had reportedly married ten times and had no child. He wanted to give away his property to a youth who used to look after him. This reportedly irked two of his relatives, who hatched a conspiracy to kill him with two other men, police said.

Senior Superintendent of Police Rohit Singh Sajwan said Jaganlal Yadav was killed on January 20.

"Police have arrested Munni Devi, the sister-in-law of the deceased, his nephew Darshan Singh, Dev Singh and Prahlad, and sent them to jail. Another accused Kalicharan is absconding," Sajwan said.

Security beefed up ahead of Republic Day in J&K

Security in Jammu and Kashmir was beefed up on Monday to ensure that the 72nd Republic Day functions pass off peacefully a day later in the union territory.

Although authorities maintain that security scenario is more relaxed in J&K in comparison to previous years, a multi-layered security was put in place, especially in the twin capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu, for the celebrations on Tuesday.

Random frisking of passengers and private vehicles, mobile security bunkers, makeshift checkposts, CCTV surveillance, sniffer dogs, deployment of sharpshooters atop high-rise buildings in close vicinity of the main parade venues in Jammu and Srinagar were among the arrangements made.

Man tied to tree, burnt alive in UP district

In a shocking incident, a 45-year-old man was tied to a tree with barbed wires and set on fire in Sheeshgarh area of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, over an old enmity.

The charred body of Dharampal was found late on Saturday night and an FIR against two persons was filed on late Sunday evening.

Station House Officer (SHO) of Sheeshgarh, Rajkumar Bhardwaj, said: "Our forensic team has collected samples and we have also started investigation. The circumstantial evidence suggests the man was forcefully tied to the tree and set on fire."

Global COVID cases surpass 99 million: Johns Hopkins

The total number of global coronavirus cases has surpassed the 99 million mark, while the deaths have surged to more than 2.12 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

In its latest update on Monday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 99,152,014 and 2,128,721, respectively.

The US is the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 25,123,857 and 419,204, respectively, according to the CSSE.

India comes in second place in terms of cases at 10,654,533, while the country's death toll soared to 153,339.

Plane crash kills 4 soccer players, club president in Brazil

Four players and the president of Brazilian soccer club Palmas died in a plane crash on Sunday in the northern state of Tocantins, the team said.

The accident occurred when the plane suddenly plunged to the ground at the end of the runway while on takeoff, the club reported in a statement.

The players were on their way to Goiania, in the central region of the country, to play a match against Vila Nova.

The victims were identified as president Lucas Meira and players Lucas Praxedes, Guilherme No , Ranule and Marcus Molinari, as well as the pilot. There were no survivors, the club said.

Palmas Futebol e Regatas was founded in 1997 and plays in Brazil's fourth division.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known. The statement didn't identify the type of plane.
