Former India opener Chetan Chauhan critical, on life support

The health condition of former India opener Chetan Chauhan, who tested positive for COVID-19 last month, has worsened after he developed multi-organ failure and he is now on ventilator support at a medical facility in Gurugram.

The 73-year-old Chauhan, who is also a Cabinet Minister in Uttar Pradesh government, was admitted at the Sanjay Gandhi PGI Hospital in Lucknow after testing COVID-19 positive on July 12.

His condition did not improve and after other complications developed, he was shifted to Medanta in Gurugram.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Saturday condoled the death of Vimla Sharma, wife of former president Shankar Dayal Sharma.

Vimla Sharma, 93, had recovered from COVID-19 a few months ago.

"Saddened to hear about the demise of Smt. Vimala Sharma, wife of former President, Dr Shanker Dayal Sharma. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family members," the Vice President's Secretariat tweeted quoting Naidu.

Shankar Dayal Sharma served as the president between 1992 and 1997.

Odisha reported its highest single-day spike of 2,496 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, taking the state's total tally to 57,126, the Health Department said on Saturday.

The COVID-19 death toll climbed to 333 in Odisha with 9 more fatalities.

Four new deaths were reported in Sambalpur district, followed by 2 in Cuttack, and one each in Ganjam, Nayagarh, and Keonjhar districts.

Global COVID-19 cases surpass 21mn: Johns Hopkins

he overall number of global coronavirus cases has surpassed the 21 million mark, while the deaths were nearing 763,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

As of Saturday morning, the total number of cases stood at 21,066,992 and the fatalities rose to 762,997, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.

The US accounted for the world's highest number of infections and fatalities at 5,309,138 and 168,396, respectively, according to the CSSE.

Brazil came in the second place with 3,226,443 infections and 105,490 deaths.
