Lalu Prasad's movement restricted due to arthritis: Doctor

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad's movement has been restricted due to arthritis, according to a doctor.

"Lalu Prasad is suffering from arthritis. Though there is not enough space to move around, we encourage him to walk. He has many diseases," said DR D.K. Jha who is treating the RJD chief at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS), here.

Lalu Prasad, convicted in fodder scam cases, is lodged at the paying ward of RIMS and will complete one year in the hospital on August 31. He has received up to 14 years in jail.

"He is taking meals as prescribed and there is no special demand from him," said Jha.

On every Saturday, three people meet Lalu Prasad at the hospital. On this Saturday, Lalu Prasad's relative, Vimal Yadav, and two others met him.

"He is not well and felt better after meeting us. He is concerned about the family. This year, he was alone on August 15, which was also Raksha Bandhan day," said Vimal Yadav.

Death toll in Bangladesh dengue outbreak hits 40

At least 40 people have died from dengue in Bangladesh, with over 50,000 cases reported throughout the country since January, authorities said on Saturday.

The number of confirmed cases recorded was more than five times higher than any other year in the South Asian country that had been struggling to contain the surge of dengue patients.

The highest number of dengue cases recorded in a single year in Bangladesh was 10,148 in 2018, said Abdur Rashid, an official at the Health Emergency Operations Centre, Efe news reported.

Padma Shri awardee Damodar Ganesh Bapat dies in Chandigarh

Eminent social worker and Padma Shri awardee Damodar Ganesh Bapat, who dedicated his life to the treatment and service of leprosy patients, died at a hospital in Bilaspur district in Chhattisgarh.

He was 84.

"Bapat was admitted to Apollo Hospital in Bilaspur last month after he suffered a brain hemorrhage," an official of the hospital said.

He breathed his last late Friday night, he added.

"Bapat had dedicated his life to the treatment and service of leprosy patients at an ashram run by Bharatiya Kushta Nivarak Sangh (BKNS) in Sothi village in Janjgir-Champa district of the state for the last four-and-a half decades," said Dipak Kumar Kahra, a worker at the ashram.

Man held for raping three-year-old girl in Surat

A man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly raping a three-year-old girl living in his neighbourhood here, police said.

The accused, Ajit Vishwakarma (20), a resident of Hirabaug locality in Surat was arrested from his house, where he had sexually assaulted the girl on Thursday, police said.

"On August 15 evening, the accused lured the girl to his house on the pretext of giving a chocolate to her and after she went to his place, he raped her there," inspector of Kapodra police station, M K Gurjar, said.

The girl's mother later came to know about the sexual assault on her daughter and lodged a complaint against Vishwakarma, police said.

UP: One dead as truck hits motorcycle in Amethi

A 27-year-old man was killed when his motorcycle was hit by a truck here on Saturday, police said.

The accident took place on the Amethi-Gauriganj national highway when Rajesh was going towards Gauriganj, SHO Gauriganj Pramod Kumar Pandey said.

The man sustained serious injuries and was taken to the district hospital but was declared brought dead by the doctors, they said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem, they added.
