All four accused in the rape-and-murder of woman veterinarian were shot dead in an encounter by Hyderabad police on Friday Morning (06.12.2019). National Federation of Indian Women, the oldest women’s organisation has condemned the encounter killing of the accused in Hyderabad rape case. The Federation emphasised that due process should be followed for the justice to be delivered. Here’s the text of the statement by Nationa Federation of Indian Women:

“The National Federation of Indian Women stands enraged at the mockery of justice by the Telangana Police. As the oldest women’s organisation in the country, standing firmly by feminist and social justice principles, we unequivocally condemn encounter killings of the accused in the Hyderabad Rape Case by Telangana Police in what is being said to be part of the ‘investigation process’.

For even a semblance of justice to be delivered in a case of sexual violence so horrific, it was imperative that due process was allowed to take place and justice was delivered by the courts after the crime of the accused was proven, rather than by the police.

We watch with dismay as various political forces of the country have started rejoicing and celebrating the denial of justice in this particular case. We must state that as a country there are big strides that we must accomplish still on the issue of women and the legal justice system. Law in the current form and the institutional execution of it leaves much to be desired and this results in routine denial of justice to women and other oppressed folks.

This senseless act of Telangana Police has not helped the cause of women at all in the country, rather it has pushed back the struggle of women who have fought for a fair and accessible legal justice system.

We understand the anger and helplessness, because of the failure of the police and judicial system, that common citizens of the country feel when an incident of sexual violence like this happens. As an organization that has consistently led and been part of struggles to ensure justice to survivors of sexual violence, we too feel this anger and pain acutely. But we believe that the only way the position of women in this country will be strengthened and become more secure is through the strengthening of the legal justice system. Encounters by police of the accused do not ensure justice.

We ask why does the government not put in place more coherent programs on gender sensitization? We ask why do police and other appropriate bodies not invest in infrastructure to ensure safety and security of women and queer people in the country? We ask why do the government and its different institutions not throw their weight behind efficiently implementing existing legislation that will prevent crimes against women in the country? We ask what right does the Telangana police have to circumvent a procedure for justice that the women in the country have struggled so hard for?

In a country fraught with cases of lynchings and mob violence, Telangana Police should be ashamed for furthering the blood lust of people who stand against the very principles of natural justice.

We want that a high-level committee be immediately constituted to look into the matter and investigate the officers who acted so irresponsibly. We demand that they be suspended with immediate effect till the time the enquiry takes place. We have no sympathy for members of established political forces in the country who are lauding this illegal action by the police in this reprehensible chain of events. As a women’s organisation, we vow to continue working hard for more timely and just convictions and against extra-judicial encounters by forces who decide to take law in their own hands.”
