Hug was 'unscripted', claims Congress

The Congress on Friday said that its President Rahul Gandhi hugging Prime Minster Narendra Modi inside Lok Sabha was an "unscripted" gesture that took "BJPs breath away".

"What an astonishing performance by Rahul Gandhi. It was a game-changing speech, tearing apart the government's claims and ending with that unscripted hug that has literally taken the BJP's breath away," Congress MP Shashi Tharoor tweeted.

After tearing into the BJP-led government in his speech during the no confidence motion on Friday, Gandhi walked across to the ruling benches and hugged Modi, taking everyone in the Lok Sabha by surprise.

"I have not an iota of hatred or hard feelings against you. You hate me. You may call me Pappu, you can use a stream of expletives for me. But I don't hate you or have even slightest of anger for you. I am the Congress," Gandhi said at the end of his nearly 40-minute fiery speech.

The Prime Minister was taken aback at first and gestured as if asking Gandhi why he was there. But the Congress President bent over, threw his arms around Modi and hugged him tight.

After recovering from an apparent shock moment, the Prime Minister called Gandhi back towards him and the two shook hands. He patted Gandhi on his back and exchanged a word or two with him, smilingly.

AAP comes out in support of Rahul's hug

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today came out in support of Congress chief Rahul Gandhi hugging Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha, saying in Parliament policies should be opposed, not individuals, reported PTI.

Senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh said that the prime minister often hugs the heads of foreign countries so what was wrong about Gandhi hugging him in Parliament.

"Parliament is the biggest temple of democracy where policies should be opposed, not individuals. But the BJP people do not like hugs, they believe in abuse," Singh claimed.

Singh said the opposition parties were not attempting to pull down the Modi government, instead they were trying to "expose" its "anti-people" policies through the no confidence motion.

No-confidence motion against Modi 27th in history of LS, first in 15 years

The no-confidence motion moved against the Narendra Modi-led government, taken up in the Lok Sabha today, is the 27th in the history of the House and the first in 15 years.

Of the 27, 15 were against Indira Gandhi during her various tenures as prime minister, reveals data from the Lok Sabha secretariat.

There were three motions against Lal Bahadur Shastri, three against P V Narasimha Rao, two against Morarji Desai and one each against Rajiv Gandhi and Atal Behari Vajpayee.

The first no-confidence motion was moved against Jawaharlal Nehru in August 1963 by J B Kripalani. The last no-confidence was moved in 2003 by Congress leader Sonia Gandhi against the Vajpayee-led NDA government.

Only once in the history of the lower house has the prime minister resigned after a no-confidence motion. In 1979, Morarji Desai resigned as the discussion on the motion was inconclusive.

BJD and BJP are hand in-glove: Orissa Congress

With BJD MPs walking out of the Lok Sabha ahead of the no-confidence motion debate against the NDA government, Orissa Congress came down heavily on Biju Janata Dal, reported PTI.

"I have alwyas said this and I reiterate, both these parties (BJD and BJP) are hand-in-glove with each other and have been deceiving Odisha all along. It's Congress Vs BJD+BJP alliance in Odisha," OPCC president Niranjan Patnaik tweeted immediately after BJD announced its walk out decision.

Dubbing the BJD as an "obedient ally" of the BJP, Patnaik said "BJP-BJD's "rishta" (relation) is clear as crystal now.

They think they can fool us with their posturing, but their stand is totally exposed. People of Odisha will never forget that when it comes to delivering a decisive blow to the BJP, BJD chose to walk out."

Opposition BJP also did not appreciate BJD walking out of the Lok Sabha ahead of the debate on the no-confidence motion.

"They should have participated in the debate and put forth Odisha's demand in Parliament. Here, they are shouting on central negligence. But, when they (BJD) get an opportunity to raise the issue at appropriate forum, the BJD people walk out," said BJP state vice-president Samir Mohanty.

Recap: When Rahul Gandhi caught PM Modi by surprise

He is known for his hugs, but this was one hug Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not expecting, reported PTI. Here is the PTI report:

After a no-holds barred and scathing criticism of Modi on several issues including Rafale jet deal today, Congress president Rahul Gandhi walked across the green-carpeted well of Lok Sabha to Modi and hugged him, a gesture which took the Treasury Bench members by surprise.

Gandhi's unexpected gesture, which quickly became a favoured video clip for television channels, came during a debate on no-confidence motion moved by the TDP against the Modi government. Gandhi's speech was frequently disrupted and prompting Speaker Sumitra Mahajan to adjourn the House for 15 minutes. When he resumed his speech, Gandhi continued his attack. Just before wrapping up, he strode over to Modi for the now-famous hug.

Modi initially looked nonplussed and did not stand up to hug him, but recovered quickly and called Gandhi back and patted him on the back. He also appeared to say a few words, which were inaudible. BJP MPs sitting behind Modi watched the brief interaction open-mouthed as the prime minister smiled at Gandhi as he walked back to his seat.

This no-confidence motion has not been brought to pull down the Modi government, but to give it a sound thrashing: Shiv Sena

"This no-confidence motion has not been brought to pull down the Modi government, but to give it a sound thrashing," Sena said in an editorial in Saamna on Friday.

Although the government is patting its back for accepting the no-confidence motion, it had no choice as it could have otherwise led to the washout of the Monsoon session, the editorial claimed.

Stating that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), which moved the no-trust motion was once a part of the NDA and Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana leader Raju Shetti, who spearheaded the milk agitation in Maharashtra, was also an ally, the Sena asked the government to "introspect" why they quit the alliance.

"After 25 years of alliance, you (BJP) mistrusted us for your ego. But ultimately the ego was crushed after you faced repeated losses in the by-polls in the country," it said, adding that the BJP has launched efforts to forge an alliance.

The Sena said people have been stabbed in the back on issues ranging from Kashmir to "achhe din", from reducing inflation to scrapping the Nanar refinery project in Maharashtra.

The promise of "achhe din" was a hit election campaign plank of the BJP ahead of the 2014 general elections.
