Punjab, Haryana too postpone Class XII exams, cancel Class X exams being conducted by state education boards

A day after CBSE cancelled Class X and postponed Class XII examinations, Punjab and Haryana governments cancelled Class X annual examinations being conducted by the respective state education boards.

Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh while chairing a COVID review meetings on Thursday decided that the students of Class V, Class VIII and X would be promoted to the next level on the basis of their previous examinations and international assessments.

The examinations of Class XII, however, were postponed till further orders.

According to a statement issued by the Punjab government, CM Capt Amarinder Singh on Thursday announced that all Class V, VIII and X students be promoted to the next class, without taking any examination, with a decision on Class XII PSEB exams, which have already been postponed, to be taken later, based on the emerging situation.

The CM took these decisions during a virtual COVID review meeting with top officials and medical experts.

The CM said while the state had closed all educational institutions till April 30, bringing down the positivity in the 11-20 age group, relief needed to be provided to school children going for exams.

For the Class V students, since exams for four out of five subjects have already been conducted, results may be declared by the Punjab State Education Board (PSEB) on the basis of the marks obtained by the students in respect of four subjects, ignoring the 5th subject.

Results for class VIII and X may be declared on the basis of Pre-Board examinations or the internal assessment of the respective schools, the Chief Minister directed the Education Department.


The Chief Minister, who had earlier this week written to the Union Education Minister in this regard, also expressed satisfaction at the Centre’s decision to postpone Class XII CBSE exams and cancellation of Class X CBSE exams in view of the pandemic.

Similarly, the Haryana government has also announced cancellation of Class X examination. State Education Minister Kanwar Pal Gurjar made an announced in this context in Hisar on Thursday.

The Haryana Education Minister said the examination of Class XII had been postponed and the result of Class X will be declared on the basis of internal assessment of students.
