Rising street crime in the Capital: PM’s kin latest victim of snatching

Two bike-borne miscreants snatched the purse from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s niece just as she had alighted from an auto-rickshaw in north Delhi’s Civil Lines area on Saturday morning

In the latest such incident of street crime in Delhi, two bike-borne miscreants snatched the purse from a relative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi while she was on her way to Gujarati Samaj Bhawan in north Delhi on Saturday.

The snatchers attacked her right outside the gate of the Bhawan while she was paying an auto-rickshaw driver.

According to reports, Damayanti Ben Modi, daughter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's brother, returned to Delhi from Amritsar on Saturday morning. She had booked a room at Gujarati Samaj Bhavan in Civil Lines area. When she reached the gates of the hotel, two bike-borne miscreants snatched her purse and fled from the spot.

Damayanti Ben Modi said that she was carrying around Rs. 56,000 in cash, two mobile phones and important documents in her wallet.


She said that she had a flight to catch in the evening, but all her documents are now missing.

She later filed a case of snatching with a police station in Civil Lines area in New Delhi. DCP(north) Monika Bhardwaj said that a case under sections of robbery has been registered based on the victim's statement. Police have recovered some CCTV footages to try and identify the robbers.

The crime spot is just a few kilometres away from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence.
