Shatrughan Sinha’s ‘dil ki baat’: “Give Imran Khan a chance”

The irrepressible Shatrughan Sinha, who is currently in Kerala to receive an award for recognition for his work as an actor and politician at Alappuzha, says he steered clear of politics while receiving the award.

“Can you believe this. In my hour-long speech I made no mention of anything political. I gave a purely motivational speech and I am proud of it. It’s time politicians stopped doing and talking politics. It has become a murky game. Time for politicians to play the role of social activists,” said Shatrughan Sinha.

However Shatruji did break his own new apolitical role of a politician by speaking of the changes across the border.

“I see a lot of negativity and skepticism among the politicians and mediapersons (who are more political these days than actual politicians) about the new Wazir-e-azam Imran Khan across the border. I say, give him a chance. Let him prove himself. He says if India takes one step forward he will take two steps, Okay, it may be just empty rhetoric. But that doesn’t give news anchors and self-appointed political guardians the right to snigger at Imran’s intentions,” says Shatruji making a veiled reference to Arnab Goswami who has been going hammer-and-tongs at Pakistan’s new Prime Minister.

Shatrughan Sinha: “I see a lot of negativity and skepticism among the politicians and mediapersons (who are more political these days than actual politicians) about the new Wazir-e-azam Imran Khan across the border. I say, give him a chance. Let him prove himself”

Says Shatruji, “As it is, Imran Khan comes to power under a pall of distrust. The opposition says he has rigged the elections. So he needs to prove himself and for that he must have support from us. Let him crystallise his intentions towards India, and then we shall see. No point in writing him off as a distrustful statesman even before he starts. And I say this sincerely. It is not Mann Ki Baat. It is Dil Ki Baat. Imran has very old ties with Bollywood and India. As a legendary cricketer and a man of varied interests—if you know what I mean—he has proven to have a lot of charm. Let’s not hold his past against him. Let’s see what he does as the Prime Minister.”

However Shatruji cautions against the politics of vendetta in Pakistan. “Imran Khan must not practice the vengeful politics of his predecessors. He must show grace and decency in the way Nawaz Sharif and his daughter are treated.”
