Assam and Tripura Police have arrested Nitu Bora and Anupam Paul respectively for their social media posts. Bora is said to have been arrested for making provocative comments against a community and blaming chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal for his failure to maintain law & order.

Bora, a member of BJP’s social media team in Assam, had blamed the BJP Government for its failure to protect the Assamese from the migrants.

Anupam Paul, the former head of BJP’s IT Cell in the state, was arrested from Delhi for allegedly spreading fake news about chief minister Biplab Deb’s allegedly impending divorce. Deb and his wife had denied the reports circulated in the media outside the state. Paul had picked up the reports and posted them with his own comments.

Paul had resigned as the IT Cell head of late and had begun criticising the BJP Government in Tripura on Facebook. Police had registered a case against him on May 7 and arrested him in Delhi on June 13.

While Paul had been reported missing, his house in Agartala was burnt and his family members attacked, allegedly by BJP supporters. Ironically, neither the chief minister nor the state government filed any case against any media house which had reported that Deb’s wife had allegedly filed for divorce in a Delhi court. But police have been quick to arrest people who shared the news on social media or dared to comment.

In Tripura, Paul is not alone. Cases have been instituted against a large number of Netizens who shared the report. A TV journalist Saikat Talapatra had also been arrested but he was released on bail by a court.

A case was also registered against Tapas Dey, spokesperson of Tripura Congress, but though the police interrogated him, he was not arrested.

Earlier in November 2018, Dipak Debnath was arrested for sharing news against the allegedly fake degrees of BJP MLA Krishnadhan Das.
