A sea of voices rose against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Tripura led by former Tripura Congress president and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on Saturday. The five-km march at Khumulwng near Dasharampara village saw in attendance nearly all tribal parties”, including those who are in an alliance with BJP in the state.

At the rally, Debbarma called for greater unity between tribals and non-tribals to be able to reject the amended Act in the state. Debbarma said politics has divided ‘Tiprasa’ (people of Tripura) over the years and raised the slogan ‘Puila Jati Ulobo Jati’, meaning ‘community first, community also at the end’.

“In Tripura and Assam, the protests are largely by Hindu indigenous people and BJP is keen to portray it as a Hindu-Muslim thing. We are Tripuris first and Hindus later,” said Debburman. In the rally, he also appealed to people to maintain peace and not view non-tribals and Bengalis as enemies as they didn’t frame CAA.

Leaders of nearly all tribal political parties including Tripura’s ruling ally Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT), IPFT-Tipraha, Tripura Peoples Front (TPF), Indigenous Nationalist Party of Twipra (INPT), Tripura United Indigenous Peoples’ Council (TUIPC) joined the rally.

Attacking the CPI(M) leader and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Debbarman said it was shocking how the CPI(M) was a part of the movement in Delhi, but Manik Sarkar has not joined or protested any movement against CAA in the state,” added Debburman.
