In September 2017, then undisputed Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had pompously dismissed former BJP Finance Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajapyee government Yashwant Sinha’s criticisms of the Modi Government’s handling of the economy.

Jaitley had then said in a speech dripping with arrogance, “I do not have the luxury as yet of being a former finance minister, nor do I have the luxury of being a former finance minister whose turned a columnist.”

Now earlier this year, when Arun Jaitley took leave for health reasons, Piyush Goyal was appointed as Finance Minister in his place. Once Jaitley came back, he has been angling to be given back control of his ministry, however there is no clarity yet and confusion reigns over who exactly is India’s Finance Minister. This is because the Finance Ministry website says Arun Jaitley is Union Minister of Finance, while the PMO website says Piyush Goyal is Union Minister of Finance. A week ago, the Congress party asked the Prime Minister to clarify whether Jaitley or Goyal is India’s Finance Minister.

But, we may finally have some clarity, courtesy this old video of Jaitley dismissing Yashwant Sinha as a former finance minister turned columnist. Given that Jaitley now seems to have lots and lots of free time to write lengthy columns on his blog, it may be safe to assume that Piyush Goyal is finance minister of India.
