The Vice-Chancellor of the famous Visva-Bharti University founded by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore landed in a major controversy after he was caught on camera saying that some of the students, opposing CAA must be taught a lesson.

In a video that was reportedly shot on January 7, the V-C, Bidyut Chakrabarty can also be heard instructing an aide to arrange a “bike bahini” (biker army), apparently to check protests against the January 8 seminar that was held to discuss CAA in the varsity.

“Come over tomorrow during the lecture at 3.30 pm. They can create trouble. Come over with your bike bahini,” the V-C is heard saying in the video.

An FIR has been registered against the VC for inciting violence against the students. Some of the students have claimed that January 15 attack on anti-CAA protesters was approved by the V-C himself.

Superintendent of Police, Birbhum district, Shyam Singh said, “We have got the FIR along with the video clippings. We have started our investigation.” The PRO of the VC, Anirban Sarkar, however, has denied that it was Chakrabarty in the video. “The voice in the clippings is not our Vice-Chancellor’s voice. It is a doctored video. It has been made to ruin the image of the university,” Sarkar was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

Bidyut Chakrabarty reportedly made the controversial comment during a march that he led January 7, a day before students affiliated to Left outfits stalled a seminar on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. BJP MP Swapan Dasgupta was supposed to address but he couldn’t as some of the students gheraoed and locked him inside the university.
