Pitching harder for a debate in Parliament over Delhi riots, the Congress on Tuesday blamed the Modi government for not allowing Opposition parties to raise people’s issues in the Parliament.

Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said while discussion was not allowed on Delhi riots in Parliament, ‘Vivad se Vishwas Bill’ was brought by the government by bulldozing democratic traditions.

Demanding that Home Minister Amit Shah comes to Parliament and take part in the debate, Chowdhury said, “Delhi is burning and government thinks it is more important to bring ‘Vivad se vishwash’ Bill in Parliament…but we were not allowed to take part in the debate. Opposition parties are not being allowed to debate issues…Democracy has been torn to shreds”.

Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said Opposition parties including Congress gave notice demanding a debate in the Parliament.

Holding the Modi government accountable for riots in Delhi, Azad told reporters, “Riots continued for three days 24X7 in Delhi but neither Delhi police nor the Central government took any action.”

“The Central government did not allow fire brigades to act in time...did not provide any security to them while leaders of the ruling party gave inflammatory speeches. What does it mean? It means Central government was behind the riots,” added Azad.
