Congress president Rahul Gandhi said on Tuesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi "lives for the camera" and accused him of ignoring the problems of the sanitation staff in Prayagraj, where he washed their feet during the Kumbh Mela.

"Narendra Modi lives for the camera. Once the cameras were shut, the prime minister did not even hear the problems of the sanitation staff," Gandhi said in a Facebook post along with Modi's picture washing the feet of sanitation workers at the Kumbh Mela.

Rise in land use to put 1,700 species at extinction risk by 2070

Nearly 1,700 species of amphibians, birds and mammals are likely to lose their natural habitats and face greater extinction risk by 2070 due to increased human land use, researchers have warned.

The species include, 886 amphibians, 436 birds and 376 mammals, all of which are predicted to lose 30-50 per cent of their present habitat ranges by 2070, according to a study published in Nature Climate Change.

Calcutta HC extends anticipatory bail to Mukul Roy for 8 more weeks in TMC MLA murder case

The Calcutta High Court Tuesday extended by eight weeks protection from arrest to BJP leader Mukul Roy in connection with the killing of a Trinamool Congress MLA.

Hearing an anticipatory bail prayer by Roy, who was booked for conspiracy in the killing of Krishnaganj MLA Satyajit Biswas, the court directed that conditions imposed on Roy in the earlier order, including a bar on his entering Nadia district, would continue.

On February 13, when Roy's application was moved before it, the court refused to grant anticipatory bail "at this stage" to the BJP leader, "keeping in mind the gravity of the crime", but granted protection to him from arrest till March 7.

Rajasthan govt starts registration for wheat procurement

The Rajasthan government has started registration for wheat procurement at ₹1,840 per quintal minimum support price (MSP) from Tuesday.

Wheat procurement process will start from April 1 in the state except Kota division, where process will start from March 15, state food and civil supplies minister Ramesh Chandra Meena said in a statement.

He said that farmers can get the registration done on Food Corporation of India (FCI) website for selling their wheat produce at MSP of ₹1,840 per quintal.

Rly cancels 25 trains, diverts seven over farmers protests in Punjab

At least 25 trains were cancelled and seven others diverted on Tuesday as protesting farmers blocked railway tracks in Punjab's Amritsar, a Northern Railways statement said. The agitation has left scores of passengers moving to and from Amritsar stranded.

Two trains — the New Delhi-Amritsar Shatabdi Express and the New Delhi-Amritsar Shan-E-Punjab Express — were short-terminated in Jalandhar City and Beas town respectively.

The trains which were cancelled include the New Delhi-Jalandhar Intercity Express, Amritsar-Haridwar Jan Shatabdi Express, Haridwar-Amritsar Jan Shatabdi Express, Chandigarh-Amritsar Superfast Express and the Nangaldam-Amritsar Express.

Poll day political ads can't be banned in LS elections as EC proposal pending with Law Min

An Election Commission proposal to ban political advertisements in newspapers on election day will not be implemented in the coming Lok Sabha polls as it is pending with the Law Ministry, say sources in the government.

The move will require changes in the Representation of the People Act and it is now up to the next Lok Sabha to take a call, the sources said.

A committee, asked to propose changes in electoral laws dealing with campaigning in the last 48 hours, recommended a ban on advertisements in newspapers on election day.

As of now, only the electronic media is barred from showing election publicity material during the last 48 hours before conclusion of polling. But the committee recommended bringing the print media under the ambit of Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act 1951.

Have reports of terrorists being trained to carry out operations through sea: Navy chief

Weeks after the Pulwama attack, Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba on Tuesday warned that there are reports about terrorists being trained to carry out operations through the sea.

Addressing a gathering of global experts at the Indo-Pacific Regional Dialogue here, Lanba said the Pulwama attack was perpetrated by extremists that were "aided by a State" that seeks to destabilise India.

"We also have reports of terrorists being trained to carry out operations in various modus operandi, including through the medium of the sea," he said.

The 26/11 attack was carried out by 10 sea-borne terrorists of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, who hijacked an Indian fishing trawler to reach Mumbai and unleash mayhem. The Navy chief said this part of the world had witnessed multiple forms of terrorism in recent years and few countries in the region had been spared.

Kerala announces fresh sops for farmers

Following farmer suicides in Kerala amid recovery notices being issued to them in the aftermath of the century's worst flood last year, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday announced fresh sops for farmers, including a moratorium on repayment of loans that will be extended till December 31.

Aiming to aid the distressed Kerala agriculture sector that faced huge losses especially in Idukki and Wayanad districts where thousands of hectares of farm land was damaged, Vijayan said: “From now on in all districts of the state barring Idukki and Wayanad, loans taken by farmers till March 2014 would get the benefit of the moratorium.”

This was earlier fixed for all loans taken till March 2011.

Why Modi silent: Mayawati on Shah's 250-terrorists-killed claim

BSP chief Mayawati on Tuesday tried to put BJP president Amit Shah in the dock over his claim that 250 terrorists were killed in the Indian air strikes in Pakistan, asking him why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was "silent" over it.

People have right to know casualties in IAF air strikes: Sena

The Shiv Sena on Tuesday said India's citizens have the right to know about the casualties in the air strike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) camp in Pakistan and that revealing such information would not lower the morale of armed forces.

Taking a dig at senior ally BJP, the Sena, in an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana' said discussions over the air strikes will linger on till the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and "burning issues" raised by the Opposition before the February 14 Pulwama attack have now been side-stepped.

"Citizens of the country have the right to know what and how much harm has been caused to the enemy by the defence forces. We do not think the morale of our forces is being lowered by asking for it," it said.

Fire on Yesvantapur-Tatanagar Express in Andhra Pradesh

Fire broke out on the Yesvantapur-Tatanagar Express in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh early on Tuesday. There were no reports of any injuries.

Andhra CM threatens to hit back at Telangana with counter-cases

Reacting sharply over the alleged data theft case, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday warned the Telangana government that if it files one case, he will respond with four cases.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President said that he would not keep quiet if raids were conducted in the name of data theft.

Alleging that Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government was stealing the TDP data and passing it on to YSR Congress for misuse in the coming elections, he accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao and YSR Congress leader Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy were working together in a conspiracy to damage the TDP.

Fog disrupts flight operations at Delhi airport

Five flights were diverted from Delhi airport due to fog on Tuesday morning, an airport official said. "There has been low visibility due to fog since 6.31 am today. Five flights have been diverted till 8.20 am," the official said. At Delhi, the minimum runway visibility required for take off is 125 metres

China hikes defence budget by 7.5 per cent to USD 177.61 billion

China, the world's second largest military spender after the US, on Tuesday announced a 7.5 per cent increase in its defence budget for this year, hiking it to a whopping USD 177.61 billion, over three times that of India.

The 2019 defence budget will be 1.19 trillion yuan (about USD 177.61 billion), according to a draft budget report to be submitted at the opening of the annual session of China's Parliament, the National People's Congress (NPC), on Tuesday.
