Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems to be a busy man these days; he is busy inaugurating metro stretches, flyovers and sewage plants. On Monday, November 19, Modi is scheduled to flag off a 3.2 kilometre section of Violet Line on the Delhi Metro route through a remote control, open the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway and lay the foundation of the country’s first Sri Vishwakarma Skill Development University in Palwal district through remote control. One can only wonder how a foundation stone can be laid through a remote control.

And, now the Opposition has claimed that the "incomplete" expressway in Haryana was inaugurated for quick publicity. In fact, it has been alleged that engineers have not tested the KMP Expressway, the third party consultant has refused to give 'completion certificate' and even HSIIDC (Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation) refused to take responsibility for any mishap.

In fact, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted, “Are you risking commuter lives only for quick publicity in the middle of elections and to benefit the private operator by ₹26 crore a month. Modiji, you should cancel the inauguration, order an enquiry and get the KMP completed.”

All of this is, of course, to increase his visibility just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, knowing fully well that the citizens of the country will seek his report card for the last five years.

In fact, the Prime Minister’s Office had in July, according to a report in Economic Times, asked all ministries to provide state-wise details of all projects that will be ready for either inauguration or laying foundation stones within the next six months.

Here is an edited list of infrastructure projects that the Prime Minister Modi had inaugurated in the last few months. It is far from exhaustive:

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated on November 12, two sewage infrastructure projects worth ₹425.41 crore in Varanasi and laid the foundation stone for another project worth ₹72.91 crore for Ramnagar.
  • On the same day, he inaugurated two National Highways, Varanasi Ring Road Phase-I and four-laning of the Babatput-Varanasi road on NH-56 and inland waterways project at his parliamentary constituency, Varanasi.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on October 21, inaugurated and dedicated to the nation a refurbished national police memorial in New Delhi and a newly-built museum for the khaki-donning forces. A 30-feet-tall and 238-tonne heavy black granite central sculpture honouring the slain troopers, a museum and a wall of valour bearing the names of over 34,800 martyred personnel were unveiled during the event held to to mark the National Police Commemoration Day.
  • On September 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Jharsuguda airport — the second airport in Odisha and laid the foundation stone of Talcher Fertiliser Plant in the state saying the ₹13,000 crore-project to revive the Talcher fertiliser plant will for the first time see coal being converted into gas for use as a feedstock and for producing neem-coated urea.
  • July was particularly busy for the Prime Minister. He had laid the foundation stone for the Samsung facility in Noida, followed it up with inaugurating the 340-km Poorvanchal expressway from Azamgarh, which is SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav’s constituency. He made five such ‘project-inauguration’ trips to Uttar Pradesh in July alone.
  • Then, again in July, the Prime Minister had inaugurated the new headquarters building of the Archaeological Survey of India. It has been equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including energy efficient lighting and rainwater harvesting.
  • In June, PM Modi inaugurated the air service between Raipur and Jagdalpur, the district headquarters of the Maoist insurgency in the Bastar region of south Chhattisgarh. The Jagdalpur airport, has become non-operational within months of its inauguration. The airport is locked out with only security personnel on duty.
  • On May 28, PM Modi inaugurated phase 1 (worth ₹841 crore) of the ₹7,500 crore project, a mere 8.36-km stretch within the borders of Delhi from Nizamuddin Bridge to the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border. Beyond which, commuters to Meerut from Delhi have to continue on the congested four-lane National Highway 34. The prime minister also claimed that the first phase had been completed in a ‘record’ 18 months. In fact, Modi himself laid the foundation stone for the project in December 2015, 30 months ago. Three phases of the six-lane expressway – UP border to Dasana, Dasana to Hapur and the greenfield phase from Dasana to Meerut – are yet to be completed.

And in between all these inaugurations, our Prime Minister Narendra Modi travels aboard, meets world leaders and hugs almost all of them.
