India could face around 13 lakh confirmed corona cases by mid-May

A study by a team of scientists revealed the shocking figures for India

It says if the spread continues at its current pace, India may have 1.3 million covid-19 cases

The estimates reinforce concerns among medical officials and experts in India

According to experts, coronavirus cases might jump sharply in the coming weeks

This will put country's health system under severe strain.

The scientists said projections could change as the country conducts more testing

Acvording to the scientists, "even with the best case scenarios, probably, India is in a very painful crisis"

The study was carried out by the COV-IND-19 Study Group of scholars and scientists

It looks into the threat posed by the coronavirus in India.

India has only around 100,000 ICU beds and 40,000 ventilators

There is not sufficient infrastructure or staff to handle a sharp spike in critical patients.

The health ministry and the ICMR is skipping forecasts as it wants no panic

So far, India has reported around 500 cases of the coronavirus and 9 deaths

Experts believe that these numbers  are now beginning to accelerate

Authorities have imposed a lockdown across large parts of the country

According to the estimates, cases could rise to more than 4,000 by the end of March

This study reveals that by April end, India will see 30,000 and 230,000 cases

Although the researchers have not projected the number of fatalities...

...but they believe India could be hit hard with millions of covid-19 cases
