A major fire broke out at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine complex in Katra on Tuesday in which one building of the complex was completely gutted. According to the reports, no one sustained injuries in the fire, which broke out in the structure adjoining the ‘Bhawan’ (sanctum sanctorum).

The reports stated that the fire started around 4.15 pm due to a short circuit. It burned for about 45 minutes before being brought under control at around 5 pm.

Several users on micro-blogging site Twitter shared videos of the incident which showed huge blaze and thick smoke billowing out of the building as firefighters worked to bring the fire under control. Firefighting squad of the shrine swung into action after CRPF personnel raised an alarm.

The Vaishno Devi complex comprises of a number of connected buildings very high up where there are numerous kitchens and sleeping halls, meant for the pilgrims who often stay overnight.
