Brigitte Bierlein became the first woman to lead the Austrian government after she was sworn in as new Chancellor of the caretaker government at the Presidential Palace, here on Monday.
Following weeks of political turmoil, triggered by a corruption scandal at the heart of the ruling nationalist Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), President of Austria Alexander Van der Bellen administered the oath of office to Bierlein, reported Efe news.

In a significant order, the Bombay High Court on Monday upheld the constitutional validity of the amended sections of the Indian Penal Code providing either life sentence or death penalty for repeat rape offences.
Dismissing petitions filed by three convicts sentenced to death in the second gang-rape case of Shakti Mills Compound challenging the constitutional validity of their punishment, Justice B.P. Dharmadhikari and Justice Revati Mohite-Dhere ruled that they found no merit in the arguments of the convicts and held the provision as constitutional.
"We are of the opinion that the Section 376E of the Indian Penal Code is not ultra-vires, the Constitution and hence need not be quashed in the present case," the judges said in their ruling with far-reaching ramifications.

The Maharashtra government on Monday transferred Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Joint Municipal Commissioner (Special) Nidhi Choudhari to Mantralaya, and served her a show-cause notice, official sources said here.
The official had tweeted disrespectfully about Mahatama Gandhi in a recent post.
An officer of 2012 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Choudhari has now been posted as Deputy Secretary in the Water Supply and Sanitation Department in the state headquarters, in an apparent fallout of her tweets against Mahatma Gandhi.
She has also been asked to explain her position with regard to her posts on Twitter that have embarrassed the government and prompted Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to take a strong view of the incident.

Haryana's Narnaul town recorded a maximum temperature of 47.2 degrees Celsius on Monday as heatwave conditions persisted in most parts of the state and Punjab.
The temperature in Narnaul was five degrees above normal, the meteorological department said.
Among other places in Haryana, Hisar sweltered at a high of 45 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal.

The Rajya Sabha will meet from June 20 to July 26 for the upcoming session of Parliament, the Upper House secretariat said Monday.
"The President has summoned the Rajya Sabha to meet on June 20, 2019 for the upcoming Session of Parliament. Subject to exigencies of business, the session is scheduled to conclude on Friday, July 26, 2019," Rajya Sabha Secretary General Desh Deepak Verma said in a statement.
The first session of this Lok Sabha will commence on June 17. The newly-elected members will be administered the oath on the first two days, and the new Speaker will be elected on June 19.

An An-32 aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) with 13 people on board went missing in Aruanchal Pradesh on Monday after taking off from Assam, an IAF official said.
The transport aircraft was flying from Jorhat to the Mechuka Advanced Landing Ground. Mechuka is a small town in Aruanchal's West Siang district bordering China.
"An An-32 aircraft of IAF got airborne today from Jorhat at 12.25 (p.m.)... The aircraft lost contact with ground agencies at 1 (p.m.). Thereafter there has been no contact," said an IAF official.
"Since the aircraft did not reach the airfield, action was initiated by the IAF. All available resources have been employed to locate the plane," he said.

Sudan's military rulers moved on Monday to break up a weeks-long sit-in outside Khartoum's army headquarters, leaving at least nine protesters dead, a doctors' committee said as gunfire was heard echoing from the site.

At least 19 people were killed on Sunday in a car bomb near a bustling market and mosque in a rebel-held city in northwestern Syria, a war monitor said.
Four children were among those killed in the explosion in Azaz, in the heart of a Turkish zone of influence in Aleppo province, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The attack also wounded more than 20 people, according to the Britain-based monitor.
"Many people were leaving evening prayers when the explosion happened," Observatory head Rami Abdul Rahman told AFP. Shoppers buying clothes and gifts ahead of the upcoming Eid al-Fitr holiday were among those killed, said Jihad Berro, a coroner at a local hospital.

The Arunachal Pradesh government has decided to hand over the killing of Khonsa West MLA Tirong Aboh and 10 others by suspected NSCN militants to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), an official said on Monday.
The state Cabinet in its first sitting on Sunday night unanimously decided that the case be handed over to the NIA as thorough investigation needs to be carried out in a time bound manner and justice be delivered expeditiously to the bereaved family members by booking and nabbing all the culprits, the official said.
The cabinet headed by Chief Minister Pema Khandu also condemned the killing of the MLA and 10 others by suspected NSCN militants.

Unidentified persons, on Monday, covered a statue of late prime minister Indira Gandhi with a burqa in Gola area of the city.
The incident angered Congress leaders who spilled on to the streets shouting slogans against the district administration and demanding an inquiry into the incident.

A seven-year-old boy died and six people were injured in a gas cylinder explosion at their home in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Monday.
The incident occurred at Jogiya Khera village in Phugana area on Sunday evening when food was being prepared and a cylinder caught fire, Circle Officer Hariram Yadav.
The body of the deceased, Fihan, has been sent for post-mortem. The injured, Gulfam (40), his wife, Parveen (38), four children were shifted to a hospital, Yadav added.

Amid controversy over the recommendation of an HRD Ministry panel to teach Hindi in non-Hindi speaking states, a revised draft education policy was issued on Monday that did not have a mention of the language being compulsory.
The DMK and other parties in Tamil Nadu had strongly opposed the three-language formula in the draft National Education Policy and alleged that it was tantamount to thrusting the Hindi language.
"Students who wish to change one or more of the three languages they are studying may do so in Grade 6 or Grade 7, so long as they are able to still demonstrate proficiency in three languages (one language at the literature level) in their modular Board Examinations some time during secondary school," the revised draft of the NEP said.

A fire broke out in an Army barrack in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, police said. There were no reports of any loss of life.
The fire broke out in the barrack in Khrew area of the south Kashmir district and fire tenders were rushed to the spot to douse the flames, a police official said.
