Delhi elections: Over 500 MCC violation complaints filed in lead-up to polls

More than 17,000 arrested under various provisions including Excise Act since MCC came into effect on 7 January

At least 504 cases of alleged violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) have been registered in the lead-up to the Delhi assembly elections, an official confirmed on Thursday. These cases were filed between 7 January, when the MCC came into effect, and 22 January.

During this period, 17,879 individuals were arrested under various provisions, including the Excise Act, according to an official statement.

In preparation for the elections, the Delhi Police have stepped up surveillance at border checkpoints and conducted crackdowns on illegal activities, such as the smuggling of arms, alcohol, and drugs.

The police recorded 504 cases of alleged MCC violations and confiscated 270 illegal firearms, along with 372 cartridges. They also seized 44,265 litres of alcohol valued at over Rs 1.3 crore, 110.53 kg of drugs worth more than Rs 20 crore, and over 1,200 banned injections. Additionally, law enforcement agencies seized Rs 4.56 crore in cash, 0.85 kg of gold, and 37.39 kg of silver, the statement said.

Voting for all 70 Delhi Assembly seats is scheduled for 5 February, with votes to be counted on 8 February.

On 20 January, Delhi Police dismantled an interstate gang involved in the illegal firearms trade, arresting three members and recovering several firearms. This operation was carried out by the special staff of the North District of Delhi Police, who seized five semi-automatic pistols, six country-made pistols (desi katta), and 28 live cartridges.

According to the police, the suspects were also linked to the infamous Pragati Maidan Tunnel robbery case of 2023. Two of the three arrested individuals had been involved in supplying illegal firearms for over 20 years.

On 19 January, Delhi Police arrested a liquor supplier for smuggling and transporting illicit alcohol across the Haryana-Delhi border in the run-up to Republic Day and the upcoming assembly elections. This incident occurred at around 7.15 am on 19 January.
