COVID-19 situation in Mumbai raises possibility of another lockdown

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is worried about the COVID-19 situation in Mumbai. While other parts of the country are seeing a decline in the number of cases, Mumbai is still struggling to bring down the numbers. The situation is so dire that authorities are contemplating imposing another lockdown.

During his Tuesday meeting, Maharashtra Chief Minister Thackeray had said: “People have become carefree. It is for the people to decide if they want a lockdown or want to continue living with the small restrictions like now.”

However, Shiv Sena has stated that “lockdown will be the last step”. Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar has also expressed concern over the current situation.

She said, "We could face another lockdown, but it is in the hands of citizens to avoid it by following the COVID-19 protocol, which they had abided by under the state government's 'My family My Responsibility' programme.

The authorities are also reviewing their decision to reopen schools in the city.

Maximum number of cases are being reported from M-west ward, with over 25 cases being reported per day. Societies with high number of cases are being sealed and others have been asked to ensure quarantine of the entire family if even one person is found positive.

However, Mumbaikars it seems are not taking the situation seriously. BMC has caught more than 15 lakh people without face masks at public places since April 2020 and collected over Rs 30 crore as fine.
