Slamming the BJP for attacking the car of Congress MLA Aditi Singh, Sushmita Dev, All India Mahila Congress President said, “This is a glaring example of the state of lawlessness in UP under BJP rule and the kind of ‘Gundaraj’ the BJP is carrying out in UP. The attack on an elected MLA and other elected Zila Parishad members goes to show that UP is no safe space for anyone particularly the women.”

The Congress MLA from Rae Bareli Sadar, Aditi Singh and the elected zila parishad members were allegedly attacked by BJP goons on May 14, while they were on their way to the District Panchayat office to attend a vote of no confidence which was scheduled to take place against the Panchayat head Awadesh Singh.

The MLC Dinesh Singh, who is Awadesh Singh’s brother, had recently contested the Lok Sabha election from the Raebareli seat on a BJP ticket against Congress candidate and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. “Awadesh Singh together with others orchestrated a life threatening attack on Aditi Singh and other Zila Panchayat members who were on their way to the District Panchayat office to cast their vote against Awadesh Singh,” contended Dev.

“It was no accident, it was planned and organized only to ensure that Awadesh Singh continues in power as undoubtedly he was going to be defeated at this No-Confidence motion. The seriousness of the incident is such that it is an attempt to murder and many have suffered grievous bodily harm. Rakesh Kumar Awasthi is admitted in hospital. The manner in which the vehicles overturned, it was a narrow escape,” emphasised the Silchar MP.

“The administration and police of Rae Bareily failed to protect these people under political pressure despite repeated requests for their protection and ensured that the democratic process of No-Confidence motion was defeated. This meeting that was being conducted was pursuant to an order of the High Court of Allahabad,” said Dev

AICC General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi had visited Rae Bareli on Wednesday, May 15, to meet Aditi Singh and the other victims. “She has made it clear that this is an attack on the people of Rae Bareli who elected them and assured that Congress will defeat these forces politically and they will not be spared legally,” remarked Dev.
