Photography, in the words of Bruno Barbey, the Moroccan-born French photographer, is the only language that can be understood anywhere in the world. And what could be a better medium for the expression of this universal language than social media.

While photography is being redefined by smartphones and everyone fancies themselves as photographers, social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp seem to the most sought-after galleries and platforms for exhibiting their photography skills.

On World Photography Day, which is being celebrated worldwide on 19 August, netizens across the globe have been posting pictures on a variety of themes.

India figures on the fourth spot among the top 10 countries that post most photos on Facebook and takes fifth position in the same category for the Messenger app, according to Facebook data.
