The Dean of Students and chairman of the eye department of Sir Sundarlal Hospital, Prof. MK Singh has been appointed as the Chief Proctor of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU). Does it fall in line with the rules and regulations of the university? Besides, another question haunts this appointment. MK Singh was the Dean of students and was responsible for the safety and security of the students, which he could not fulfil. Instead of penalising him for that, why was he made Chief Proctor?

What is behind Vice- Chancellor Girish Chandra Tripathi handing him the promotion? According to the BHU calendar, MK Singh’s appointment is actually a violation of the university’s rules. At present, Prof. MK Singh has three important posts, while the teachers at BHU told National Herald that it is against the university’s rules and regulations. And there is an air of strong disagreement blowing through the university campus due to this promotion awarded to MK Singh.

At the time when the girl students staged a protest against sexual harassment, Prof. MK Singh was the Dean of Students and it was his responsibility to ensure the safety and security of the students. But he completely failed in doing this. The Chief Proctor was removed because he mishandled the entire issue of students’ agitation. The Dean of Students, Prof. MK Singh should also have been removed in the same manner. But insiders in the BHU administration and faculty suggest that by appointing his own trusted official as chief proctor, the VC has actually kept the reign of the entire university administration in his own hands.

Here it should be remembered that when the girl students of BHU were protesting and the police were beating them up with lathis, the VC was busy appointing his cronies. The issue of appointing an accused in a case of sexual harassment, Dr OP Upadhyay, as medical superintendent has become public. Dr Upadhyay was interviewed on September 25. The charges of sexual harassment of a student from Fiji have been proved. Despite that, he was not only called for an interview but the VC also tried to appoint him medical superintendent. It only reaffirms the fact that VC Girish Chandra Tripathi is busy appointing his own people in the university.

Now, he is being accused of appointing many people in a hurry. On September 17, the written examination for the post of assistant registrar was conducted. On September 22, the results of this examination were declared late at night. The selected candidates were called for an interview on September 24-25. Many lecturers and professors of the University have objected to this entire episode because according to the rule, the selected candidates should be informed by a letter, 21 days before the interview. Though the entire selection process was objected to, the BHU administration is maintaining silence over the issue. The interview has taken place, violating and ignoring all the rules of the university, many teachers said this to National Herald.
