Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, announced on Facebook, that Arvind Subramanian, the Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India, would return to the US.

“Few days ago, Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian met me over video conferencing. He informed me that he would like to go back to the United States on account of pressing family commitments. His reasons were personal but extremely important for him. He left me with no option but to agree with him," Jaitley has written on Facebook.


Subramanian said he was extremely grateful to Jaitley for his generous words and thanked him for his “most rewarding and fulfilling” job.

Subramanian, a Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, was appointed India's Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) in October 2014. His term was for three years, which was set to end on October 16, 2017. Subramanian had got an extension of one year in September last year. He took over when his predecessor Raghuram Rajan became the RBI governor.

He had graduated from St Stephen's College, Delhi, and got an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He obtained M.Phil and D.Phil from the University of Oxford, UK.
