The Indian social media woke up to a pleasant surprise by the Gully Boy team. It released a ‘teaser’ to the trailer of the much anticipated film of this year. The one and a half minute video introduces Ranveer Singh as the ‘voice of the streets’ and he is rapping! The rap for a change is not about love or a love interest, its’s about the struggles of a common man which begins with ‘khadaa hun kaise mein yahan naa mujhse poochhna/ dard shayri me chahiye tujhko saboot kya...’ (How I am standing here, don’t ask me, what more proof of pain in the poetry, don’t ask me...). The lyrics by Spitfire are strong and impressive.

Ranveer Singh is in a completely new avatar as opposed to the larger than life characters he has played in his recent films. He seems to be playing the character of a street singer--an artist, who gives shape to the future of a society and has no other introduction of caste, colour or creed. The rap is indeed impressive with some meaningful lyrics and is sure to be a hit.

It has been hailed as completely a novel way of introducing the trailer of a film and remained a top trending topic on Twitter in India.

Directed by Zoya Akhtar, Ranveer Singh Alia Bhatt starrer Gully Boy’s trailer is all set to be released on January 9. The film is based on the life and struggles of ‘Divine’ an underground rapper from Mumbai and will hit the screens on February 14.
