The trailer of Shonali Bose’s awaited family drama: The Sky Is Pink, is so euphoric it left me giddy with joy and made me completely forget that there is a tragedy and a death at the core of the story.

Not that the trailer overlooks the taint in the ecstasy.

Moving fluidly from joy to pensive tension, Shonali whose last feature film was the outstanding study of unorthodox sexuality and physical disability called Margarita With A Straw, first shows Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar as couple giddily in love. There is courtship and mild phone sex too.

The two actors share a genuine camaraderie, so lacking in marriages where the parents have to deal with an ailing child. Then, the child with a congenital disease played by Zaira Wasim describes her ailing daughter’s character as the villain of the show.

She is wrong. The villain is destiny that deals such cruel blows to those who least deserve to be unhappy, let alone dead. Interestingly, Zaira’s character calls her parents ‘Panda’ and ‘Moose’. Everyone here is a bit crazy.

Crazy about love, about life…The trailer of The Sky Is Pink opens up the skies to let the rain and sunshine in.

The miracle is not so much the upbeat mood of the trailer. It’s the whole idea of not letting death overrun your zest for life. What works the most is what you least expect to work. A family coping with an illness not allowing despair to get its foot in edgewise. Now, that’s something exceptional.
