The bikini has turned 72 years old as the first bikini was launched in France on July 5, 1946 by an automotive engineer, Louis Réard with the help of a 19-year-old Micheline Bernardini. He named it ‘Bikini Atoll’ after the place where USA was holding nuclear tests, thinking that this beach wear will be as ‘explosive’ culturally as the nuclear bomb and called it ‘an anatomic bomb’.

The oldest bikini can be traced back to about 1,700-year-old Roman mosaic called Chamber of the Ten Maidens in which women playing two-piece cloth can be seen playing the hand ball.

But the credit for modern bikini can be given to the second World War, which saw a major shortage of fabric. Around that time women at the beaches wore gowns or tank suits. But fabric shortage post World War II forced the United States War Production Board to cut on the usage of natural fibre cloth along with a mandate on reduction of fabric in beachwear for women.

Thus the two-piece wear came into use and fast became a fashion wear at the beaches though initially it was banned in many countries and even the Vatican declared it to be ‘sinful’.

Come 21st century and the beach wear has gone through many ‘fashionable’ changes. But in India, there is still shame attached to the beach wear, no matter however comfortable it may be

The recent example is none other than the daughter of Bollywood’s King Khan, Suhana Khan who posted a photo of hers in bikini on Instagram and trolls ‘condemning’ her flooded the social media platform.

Some called her ‘cheap’ and some asked her to be ashamed of wearing the two-piece dress. Interestingly, some of them said that Suhana is tarnishing the reputation earned by her father, super star Shah Rukh Khan. The question remains, how can a piece of cloth spoil someone’s reputation?

Fortunately, there was a sufficient number of people snubbing the trolls too.

Shah Rukh Khan had earlier remarked in one of the interviews that Suhana aspires to be an actress. Suhana who is studying abroad, makes it a point to mark her presence felt whenever she visits India.

Suhana is not the only one who got trolled for posting a picture in bikini. A few months back the Dangal actress Fatima Sana Shaikh was also trolled for posting a photo of herself in a swim wear. But she had boldly retorted and silenced the trolls.
