Thugs of Hindostan starring Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan together for the first time had raised quite a curiosity among the Hindi film audiences. Although the jokes started appearing on social media about it being released on the same day when the demonetisation was announced two years ago, the film’s spectacular marketing strategy kept the curiosity alive till its release.

The film opened with a massive collection of ₹59.35 crore and a great disappointment on day one. Subsequently, its box office collection dropped on the second day to just ₹29.25 crore. The people shared their disappointment with the movie on social media and several funny and interesting memes and comments appeared deriding the movie.

Some even said that if Aamir Khan does not pay attention to the content, his days at the box office would soon be over.

As far as critics are concerned, the film opened to some the harshest reviews. Well-known film critic Rajiv Masand wrote, “ The biggest disappointment, without question, is the wasted opportunity of a plot that squanders the possible chemistry between Bachchan and Khan... It doffs its hat to everything from Kranti to Pirates of the Caribbean, but this ship hits the iceberg early on in its journey.”

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh called it “a king-sized disappointment”. Senior film critic Shubhra Gupta wrote in The Indian Express, “Not only do you end up picking up on past films, scenes and references, you are left struggling with staleness and boredom.”

Calling the film “an awe-inspiring disappointment”, Umesh in Koimoi even warned Aamir Khan about choosing films with caution; “At this stage of his career, Aamir Khan should be extra cautious of not slipping towards the projects and act in the movies he’s known for. Thugs Of Hindostan will do nothing but steal your ticket money giving nothing memorable in this barter.”

Whether the film will still continue to earn at the box office-will be clear only after Monday. But one thing is for sure, Aamir Khan has drawn as much flak with this flick as he won praises for the content of his films earlier. It is he, who the audiences expect something new and interesting from and he will certainly have to give more thought to the roles and movies he chooses to do next.
