Congress candidate from Rajkot West Indranil Rajyaguru was arrested late on Saturday evening after he and Congress workers protested against BJP workers taking down Congress banners put up with permission. Rajkot police caned Congress supporters, arrested Rajyaguru and other Congress leaders and, according to yet unconfirmed reports, had registered cases of rioting against them.

When Congress leaders and workers reached the police headquarters in Rajkot close to midnight, they were once again caned and journalists covering the incident beaten up.

BJP supporters were taking down Congress banners ostensibly because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled election rally in Rajkot on Sunday. When Rajyaguru was informed, he and his brother rushed to the Brahm Samajwadi and tried to stop it. On his refusal to allow his banners to be taken down in view of the PM’s visit, he and his supporters were attacked.

Police was called by the Congress leaders but when they arrived, they took Congress leaders into custody. Rajyaguru’s brother had to be rushed to the hospital as he was bleeding profusely.

When other Congress leaders reached police HQ to intervene, they too were arrested and Congress supporters dispersed forcibly.

Congress leader and MP Rajeev Satav was also arrested late Saturday night when he reached Rajkot Police HQ to help Indranil Rajyaguru and other Congress leaders, according to information shared on the social media.
