ABVP activists go berserk after SCP-NSUI win Allahabad student union polls

An unruly mob of ABVP activists, reportedly set ablaze hostel rooms and even hurled bombs. Fire tenders and police personnel were immediately pressed into action to douse flames and restore normalcy

Soon after the declaration of the student union election results in the Allahabad University on Friday evening, violence gripped the campus as warring protesting students as well as police clashed on the campus.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) suffered a major jolt in the elections as Samajwadi Party's student wing Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha (SCS) and the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) won major posts.

An unruly mob of enraged ABVP activists, as per reports, set ablaze hostel rooms as a results of which furniture, documents, and clothes were gutted in the fire. Fire tenders and police personnel were immediately pressed into action to douse the flames and restore normalcy, reports said, adding that “protesters even hurled bombs.

Police even resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the agitating students. Student leaders claimed that the violence was initiated by the opposition leaders. Many student leaders were also arrested during the police action.

The situation remains tense on the varsity campus.



Uday Kumar Prakash of the SCS was elected president whereas Akhilesh Yadav of NSUI was elected vice president. ABVP's Shivam Singh and SCS' Satyam Singh Sani were elected as general secretary and joint secretary respectively. Similarly, Aditya Singh of NSUI was elected for the post of cultural secretary.
