With the onset of assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the politics of polarization is witnessing a spurt. After the proposal to change the name of Aligarh to Harigarh in the district panchayat meeting in Aligarh today, the citizens of Aligarh are feeling restless. Leaders of all opposition parties of Aligarh have strongly criticized it and called it motivated by the politics of polarization.

Congress leader and former MLC Vivek Bansal has strongly criticized this decision. In a conversation with NH, Bansal, who is Haryana in-charge of Congress, said that Aligarh has its own cultural and historical importance. This district is a place of communal harmony and mutual brotherhood. There is no point in changing the name of Aligarh. Changing the name will not solve the problems of the people of Aligarh.

The government should make efforts for the better life of the citizens, but they are sad that the government of Uttar Pradesh is doing very negative politics. He said that changing the names of cities would establish a wrong narrative and it is not a welcome move at all, he strongly opposes it. Every city has a history and cultural heritage and should not be tampered with, Bansal said.

After the resolution of changing the name of Aligarh to Harigarh in Aligarh district panchayat meeting was passed today, there has been a political upheaval in Aligarh. Now this proposal will be sent to the state government for approval. All the political parties have given their reaction on this.

Samajwadi Party's Yuvjan Sabha national president Mohammad Fahad has also criticized this decision of the Uttar Pradesh government.

Fahad said that to hide its failure, the government is bringing up issues which have communal implications. By changing the names it wants to create distance between the two communities, while Ali and Hari are one and the same.

This is the third district panchayat within a month in the state of Uttar Pradesh where a resolution to rename cities has been passed. Earlier, the District Panchayat of Mainpuri had also passed a resolution demanding to change the name of Mainpuri to Mayan Nagar.

The proposed name is based on the name of Saint Mayan who is credited with the founding of present-day Mainpuri. The second case is of Firozabad District Panchayat, where a resolution has been passed demanding to change the name of Firozabad to Chandranagar.
